Surrounded by the love of his family, Peter Quick of Brockville died peacefully October 22, 2023 at home in the arms of the angels. He had been courageously battling stomach cancer for many months. He was just 2 weeks shy of his 73rd birthday. For those who knew him, Peter was a very kind and friendly man and always relatively quiet mannered but one for whom the saying, “still waters run deep” is most appropriate. The welfare of others constantly seemed to be his utmost concern… even to the detriment of his own well being at times.
Peter James Quick was born November 5, 1950 in Windsor, Ontario, the younger son of Lloyd Arthur Quick and his wife Margaret Eleanor Wilkinson. Peter attended kindergarten in Kingsville, ON but then moved with his family to Brockville in 1956. He attended Commonwealth for Grades 1 – 7 where he enjoyed playing the trombone in the Jr & Sr Bands, Toniata for grade 8 and graduated from TISS in 1969 as an Ontario Scholar. Peter earned his Hons BSc (Engineering) from Queen’s University in April 1973 and married Valerie Elizabeth Clark at Highway Pentecostal Church, then located at on King St. West, on August 18th, 1973. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary this year.
Self-taught, Peter earned his Ham Radio License (with Morse Code proficiency) and callsign, VE3GMQ, in 1966 at the age of 15 years (the youngest age allowable at that time). He earned his Advanced Operator’s license in 1972. He taught the Ham Radio License Qualification Course at St. Lawrence College, Brockville during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s and received his two-letter call sign, VE3SO, in May 1983.
Peter began working for Dupont Canada Inc., Maitland, ON as a Professional Engineer (Electrical) in May 1973 and was “on loan” to Petrosar, Sarnia, ON for 6 months in 1977. He was promoted to Senior Design Engineer (Project & Engineering (1983) / Engineering & Computer Support (1985) for Dupont Canada, Maitland Site. Peter was then promoted to Sr. Design Engineer (Instrument/Electrical) in 1991 and to Associate Engineer in the same year.
Peter received two Engineering “Pathfinder” Awards: A ‘Group’ Award in 2000 and an ‘Individual’ Award, including an Astrolabe, in 2001…Dupont Canada’s highest award for engineering achievement. He was ultimately promoted to Sr. Associate Engineer in 2001 and retired in Nov 2004 after 31.5 years of service.
Mr. Quick is survived by his wife, Valerie Elizabeth Quick and their son, Daniel Clark James Quick, his wife, Allison Robyn Cherry and one much loved 2-year-old grandson, Evan Douglas James Quick, all of Brockville. He also leaves one brother, Chuck Quick and his wife Judy and one sister-in-law, Janice Moran and her husband Rick, also all of Brockville. As well, he leaves four nephews, Adrian (Melissa) Quick, Ian (Sabrina) Quick, Matt (Adriane) Quick and Clark (Kim) Moran and one niece, Megan Quick.
Mr. Quick was predeceased by his parents, one sister, Elizabeth ‘Anne’ and his wife’s parents, Ronald “Blondie” Clark and his wife Marie. Peter was a longtime golf member of the Brockville Country Club along with his father, father-in-law and son.
A celebration of Peter’s life will be held in Maitland, ON at Roselawn Irvine Memorial Chapel on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 11:00 am, with Rev. Patsy Henry officiating, his son Dan, giving the eulogy, his niece, Megan as soloist and his brother-in-law, Rick Moran, sharing reflections from Peter’s nephew Clark Moran. All are invited to join the family in the Reception Centre afterwards. The Service of Committal and interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in the Garden of the Christus. Peter has not really left us because he will remain a vital part of everyone who knew him and especially those who loved him.
Peter and Valerie would like to sincerely thank his many doctors for their care and compassion, namely Brockville’s Dr. Enrique Torres, Dr. Gerry Ashe, Dr. Brian Wagg, Dr. Ashton Spencer & Dr. Bob Carson and Ottawa’s Dr. Carolyn Nessim & Dr. Tina Hsu and all their dedicated health care teams.
