Obituary
Peter lived a life of integrity, strength, incredible resilience and dignity which he demonstrated right up until he passed away from this earthly life in the early hours of May 7, 2024. A dear former colleague reflected that Peter “meant so much to so many people.” A true statement of how he lived.
Born in Tallinn, Estonia during WW2, the family lived in chaos until September 1944 when they escaped to Stockholm in a small fishing boat. They later emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1951.
His early years were spent involved in many Estonian community activities including the Boy Scouts, summer camp “Jōerkaru” and the Estonian Students’ Society. His musical interests included piano studies and accompanying the Estonia Koor, as well as playing the oboe in high school at Runnymead Collegiate.
After Lakeshore Teacher’s College, Peter began teaching for the Peel County Board of Education, now known as the Peel District School Board. Following years his initial years at Hillcrest P.S. and Erindale S.S., Peter moved to The Woodlands in 1970 where he taught until his retirement in 1998. During his time there, Peter completed his B.A. at Waterloo Lutheran University (Wilfrid Laurier U.), as well as his M. of Education at Niagara University. He was an inspired and devoted teacher who was appreciated by his students for his high standards and genuine caring. A dedicated basketball coach and referee, Peter was very proud of the accomplishments of his teams.
As a department head, Peter’s extraordinary administrative skills were appreciated by those who were in his department as well as his administration of various Heritage Language Programs offered by the school board. For many years Peter served as Branch President of O.S.S.T.F. and was involved with the provincial investment committee. His colleagues will remember him for his generosity of time and putting the welfare of others before his own.
In retirement Peter continued the fundraising initiative he began for The Woodlands in 1996 and continued that project until 2012. He managed the Oakville Symphony for seven years and enjoyed several LTO teaching assignments. He and his wife Susan became involved with showing and breeding Welsh Terriers and have many joyful memories of the times spent with the puppies.
Peter loved family time and instilled an appreciation of music, sports and travel in his children; with fond memories of trips to Florida, piano duets and cheering on the Blue Jays for many years. His yearly football pools were enjoyed by many colleagues and organized with the help of Leanne and Rob. Our home was always the social hub for family and friends and everyone who knew Peter felt welcomed.
Peter had a wide range of hobbies; he and his father wrote chess problems for the Toronto Star, he was an accomplished and competitive bridge player, loved playing pool, was an excellent golfer, and he enjoyed volunteering for the Canadian Open when it was held at Glen Abbey as well as marshalling at Granite Ridge Golf Course.
Peter and his wife Susan were avid travellers and have many happy memories of their multiple trips to England, Estonia, reconnecting with family in Sweden, Italy, Germany, Austria and various cruises.
Peter is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Susan (Barber), his son Robert Kahro and daughter Leanne Stanley (Adam). He will be very missed by grandchildren Peyton, Maddox, Tenley, Aidan and Kate. Peter is also survived by his sister Merike Hanemann (Udo) and brother Indrek Kahro (Clare) and predeceased by his parents Alfred and Elsa Kahro.
During Peter’s illness he was able to remain at home due to the support of the Acclaim Health team; with special mention to Julianna, whose insightful care and compassion over many months was so appreciated as Peter’s health declined. Susan is very grateful for the variety of programs that helped Peter stay engaged; the Soper Club at Patty’s Place, Oakville Strokers and Challenge Golf. The family is extremely grateful for the tremendous care he received from Dr. Olga Lemeshko, Dr. Michael Heffernan, and the palliative care nurses at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their passion and care.
Peter suffered a cardiac arrest at home in 2010. If it were not for the persistence of Halton’s Paramedics, the life saving gift he received at the Trillium Cardiology Unit and the talents of Dr. Gopal Bhatnagar and his team, he would not have enjoyed the extra years he did.
Peter’s Celebration of Life will be held at St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Oakville at 11 am Tuesday, June 4. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Cardiology Department at Trillium Health Partners Foundation or to Patty’s Place, Acclaim Health, Oakville.
Peeter, ma armastan sind.
