Mr. Peter Harmatiuk
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Harmatiuk 96 years of age. He passed peacefully in Nipigon Hospital with family by his side. Peter was born in Austria (now Part of Ukrainian) and came to Canada at the age of seven. He lived most of his life in Loon Lake then in Red Rock , worked for Domtar as a tug boat boom operator then moved to the position as a Bleach Plant operator, Retiring at age 65.
He was an avid golfer; hunter, fisherman, cribs player, poker player and In his younger years he was involved in the pistol club winning many regional trophies for his marksmanship. In his youth he worked two jobs at times and was acting Fire Chief of Red Rock fire department for 2.5 years, second in command for 25 years. He drove Taxi, was an Ambulance driver. He was an excellent carpenter and at the age of 94 he helped build a beautiful 8×8 bathroom in his home. He was well known and well liked and was always willing to help others when needed.
He married Joan Cormier in 1950 and together had 6 children. Peter Jr Harmatiuk, Joyanne & (Ron) Jeffery, Michael Harmatiuk, (Cheryl Cameron) Cindy & (Brian) Liddicoat, Richard Harmatiuk, and John Gary Harmatiuk who passed in infancy.
He is survived by his children Peter Joyanne, & Michael losing his daughter Cindy last January, his wife in 2020 and his son Richard in 2017. He also lost his two brothers Steve & Albert (Polly Harmatiuk), two brothers- in-laws Robert and Richard Cormier and his sister-in-law Valma Harmatiuk within the last 7 years.
He is survived by 13 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. He enjoyed time with all his grandchildren, He was very close to his eldest Grandson David Vandal who travelled many summers to come spend time with his grandpa, He enjoyed and looked forward to their weekly phone calls. He also enjoyed his visits from his grandson & family Collin Harmatiuk (Peter junior) He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Pete Treasured his special relationship with his adopted sister Theresa Sloan who loved Pete as her second dad, without Theresas selfless sacrifice dad would not have been able to enjoy staying in his own home the last four years, nor would he have been able to make his many Dr. appointments in Nipigon & Thunder Bay. He enjoyed going on day road trips with his side kicks Theresa, Joyanne & his sister-in-law Patsy Winfield who was always up visiting Pete.
He loved his apple trees and was proud of how much they produced. This year he peeled over 800 apples in which his daughter Joyanne made him apple sauce and pie fillings. He loved having flowers around him even if they were the plastic kind and enjoyed gardening. He was a happy man who enjoyed a full long healthy life. He will be missed by those that treasured their relationship and time with him.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Center, 575 Central Avenue.
