Peter «Don» Backlund Obituary
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of (Peter) Donald Backlund at 77 years old, with his loving children by his side, on Thursday, March 7th, 2024. He was born to Elsie Marie Backlund (nee Smith) and August Backlund in Minnedosa, Manitoba on January 31st, 1947. He is survived by his daughter Joni Smyth (husband Norman), son James, granddaughters (Elizabeth, Olivia, Samantha), and sister-in-law Kellie. He is predeceased by his wife Janice (nee McClay), parents (Elsie and August), cousins (Arnold and Dolly Backlund), and grandson (Baby John).
An only child, he spent his youth doing activities like going to school (maybe), driving his car down country back roads to nowhere, playing in various local rock bands with his friends (Ron Sweeting was ride or die) and helping his parents on the farm, in the area colloquially known as Scandinavia. In 1967, he earned an industrial welder certificate, grew a serious set of mutton chops, and married his wife in 1976. He fathered two children in 1980 and 1982 respectively, earned his red seal industrial welder certificate in 1989, then moved the entire family out to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, to join his father-in-law’s long haul trucking outfit. Once his children completed high school, the family moved back to Manitoba to be closer to home.
He enjoyed nothing more than good food, good rock music, his family, surrogate daughters, and his many cats and dogs. They were everything to him. His music and movie collection was enormous, and you’ll never find a bigger fan of AC/DC than him. He was a frequent fixture at Minnedosa Bowl, having earned several awards and placements in provincial tournaments in 5-pin bowling.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Rideau Park Personal Care Home for keeping him safe, relatively healthy, and his children sane for the past 8 years. They were a pleasure to work with. The family would also like to thank Amanda Tobar for being their port in a storm for the last couple of months.
