In Celebration of
Peter Allan Woolley
July 12, 1929 –
April 21, 2024
Peter Allan Woolley, in his 94th year, passed away in the same manner he lived his life, peacefully, quietly and gently, on April 21, 2024. Born July 12, 1929. Lifelong resident of Burlington until moving to Guelph in 2021. Predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Peggy (Thompson) and his parents Ernestine (Chadwick) and W. Allan Woolley, sisters Barbara Perry and Pinky Beamish, granddaughter Tara Munro Cornelius and wife Fern James. Cherished by his loving partner Virginia Gruen.
Peter will remain in the hearts of his children, Linda (Doug) Munro Burlington, John (Jennifer) Woolley Dunnville, and David (Julie) Woolley Barrie. Forever loved by grandchildren, Andrea (Cory) Szyjka, James (Lucy) Woolley, Jason (Jenn) Woolley, Adam (Sandra) Munro, Chris (Charlene) Woolley, David Jr. (Lindsay) Woolley, Kyle (Hayley) Woolley, Jazmyne Woolley, Tara’s husband Duane Cornelius, and 20 great grandchildren. Dearly remembered by Virginia’s children Brad (Joanne) Bechtel, Jane (Scott) Robb and David (Wendy) Bechtel and sister-in-law Wendy Shearer (George Goddard) and brother-in-law Stuart Shearer.
Peter was an outstanding athlete as a youth, excelling at swimming, baseball, hockey, lacrosse, and was a player for the early Hamilton Wildcats football team (Canadian champions) which evolved to become the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He played from 1950-1958, with a Grey Cup win in 1953. When his children were young, he coached their hockey, baseball and football teams.
Raised in Burlington when it was still a village, he attended the three-room Maplehurst Public School located on the two-lane unpaved Plains Road. Peter loved to share stories of the many changes and development of the growing city, as well as tales of his youth spent exploring the Bayshore-Indian Point area. He even worked part-time at the landmark Brant Inn. In Aldershot, he watched the market gardens and orchards become housing developments.
Peter enjoyed a successful career that lasted 40 years in the trucking industry for White/Western Star, in design, sales and management.
He listened to and collected all types of music, especially New Orleans jazz, and was a long-time member of the Waterloo Dixieland Jazz Club. Peter enjoyed playing bridge at many Burlington clubs. After moving to Guelph, he joined the Trinity United Church Sunshine Bridge Club.
A quiet gentleman, Peter’s knowledge, kindness and humour were appreciated by family, friends and neighbours.
The family thanks the wonderful staff at Hilltop Manor, Cambridge, for their kindness, support and care of Peter during the past month.
Resting at Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 1010 Botanical Drive, Burlington, ON, with a Celebration of Life on Monday, May 13th, 2024, at 2:00 pm. A New Orleans Jazz procession (please bring your umbrella) will escort Peter to his interment at Bayview Cemetery & Crematorium, and back to Bay Gardens.
As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Salvation Army would be appreciated by the family,
May Peter rest in peace – He will be missed.
