Penny Radakovitch Obituary
Penny Marie Radakovitch, 76, of Wetaskiwin, passed away peacefully in her home on June 19, 2025.
Born and raised in Consort, Alberta, Penny was the oldest of five children (Frank, Colleen, Teddy, and Bill). While her early years were spent in Consort, the family moved to Red Deer when Penny was 12 years old, and then onto Wetaskiwin a year later, where Penny lived most of her life. Although the siblings ages spanned almost two decades – and their personalities couldn’t be more diverse – the bond that was formed between them cultivated into life-long friendships. That friendship was also extended to Theresa Pal, a sister she met later in life. No matter where each of them has lived, they always stayed connected.
Penny’s one goal in life was to be a mom, and that opportunity came in 1967 with the birth of Gary. A few years later she met Al, and they were married in 1973. Penny continued her pursuit of being a mom with the births of Angela and Amanda; and when she thought her days of raising babies might come to an end, Kyle (grandson) was welcomed into the family in 1985. Penny and Al raised their family in Wetaskiwin in the home the two of them built together (literally built with their own hands) and where Penny lived for the past 45 years.
Raised by a strong matriarch (Faye Doherty), there wasn’t anything that the family needed that Penny couldn’t make or create. Whether it was sewing clothes and quilts, knitting scarves, mitts, toques, or baking pies, the family always found ways to live comfortably so that Penny could be a stay-at-home mom.
All the skills she learned became a large part of her purpose-driven life. Her passion projects spanned decades including carpentry projects, house painting, and quilt making that contributed to the family income; a dog clothing business called Pampered Pet Outlet which she had sewn more than 2,000 pet outfits for; and numerous crafting ventures that included bird houses, bat houses, bee condos, and over-the-rainbow bridges – to name a few.
When the children grew up and left the nest, Penny still had a lot of nurturing left to share. She became a strong advocate for persons with developmental disabilities; she found purpose and fulfilment in her time with the Eagles Club – a drop-in centre for special needs individuals, and for supporting individuals in gaining life skills. Penny opened her home and spent the rest of her life as a care giver.
Penny led a life of high impact. Like her mom, Penny dedicated so much of her time to volunteering her time and skills – and the organizations she supported always benefited from her contributions.
During COVID, Penny sewed more than 2,000 masks and gave them away to anyone who needed one. As fast as she could sew them, there was a line up ready to take them. She also made more than 250 gowns for hospital staff, as well as any other supplies they needed. Over the years, she knitted toques and mitts for newborns in a hospital in Africa, crocheted and knitted hundreds of items that were sold in fundraisers in support for charitable organizations, and most recently, she, along with eight other women, have contributed to the Good Samaritan Christmas Child Shoebox project. Throughout her life, she was always helping others.
Anyone who had the opportunity to meet Penny would say she’s a community builder and uplifted those around her. Her ability to create a shared purpose and bring people together was one of her superpowers. She would never shy away from any project or opportunity to contribute.
Penny is predeceased by her mother (Faye Doherty), father (James Wilfred Doherty), and brother (Theodore). She is survived by her children Gary Radakovitch, Angela Radakovitch-Smith (Paul), Amanda Radakovitch (Trevor); and her grandchildren Kyle Radakovitch (Shentel), Laythan Smith, Brandon White, Avi Smith, and Jaxon Smith.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who have supported Penny over the past few years: her neighbor Rod for doing her yard work, shoveling her sidewalks, and taking care of any other tasks she would assign him; Henry, who lived with her for more than 20 years, for his company and camaraderie; Dr. Venter and Dr. Kahn (and the healthcare teams) for their care and kindness; and the MAID team (Peter and Jocelyn) who supported Penny along her cancer journey.
A celebration of life will be held later this summer; a notice will be sent out through the newspaper and Facebook when the date is confirmed.
Mom, you will always be in our hearts and memories; you are loved and missed.
In lieu of flowers, and to honour Penny’s high-impact legacy, please consider donating your time, performing an act of kindness, or paying it forward.
