Peggy Wilkie Obituary
Peggy Wilkie
December 28, 1928 to September 27, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peggy (Collings) Wilkie (aka Nanny Peggy) at Chancellor Park long term care facility on Friday, September 27, 2024, with family members by her side. The Wilkie family would like to thank the staff and medical team at Chancellor Park for the care and compassion they provided during Peggy’s time there.
Peggy was predeceased by husband George Wilkie, father Frank Collings and mother Clarice Collings (aka Trixie). She is survived by Leonie, Blair and Lori; grandchildren Kristy (Joel), Lindsay, Peter (Crystal) and Andrew; great-granddaughter Madison.
Mom was born in Portland, Dorset, England, but was evacuated to Fingle Farm (in Exeter) during World War II. In her early 20’s she boarded a ship with a friend and travelled to Africa, where she went to work as a switchboard operator in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). She fell in love with George, who worked in the post office, and married him in December of 1952. Leonie was born in 1954. They returned to England in 1956, George joined the RAF, and, eventually, they immigrated to Canada. Blair was born in Goose Bay in 1962. As a part of the RCAF, George was posted to Metz, France and the family travelled around Europe for the next 5 years. The challenges of international travel (with two children) brought the family back to Canada in 1967. Ultimately, Canada became home for Nanny Peggy. In 1974, the Wilkie family settled down in Gander where mom began working with Employment Insurance. She eventually moved to St. John’s and, shortly after, retired from a lengthy and successful career.
A consummate seamstress, an eloquent storyteller, a proper lady and a genuinely nice human being, Peggy will be dearly missed.
Cremation has taken place, and a service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 5, 2024 in the chapel at Barrett’s Funeral Home at 73 Commonwealth Ave, Mount Pearl, NL.
Family meant everything to Peggy so, in lieu of flowers or donations, please hug someone that you love.
