Peggy Knott Obituary
IN LOVING MEMORY OF PEGGY KNOTT
On Wednesday, January 31, 2024 Peggy Knott left a rich and full life spanning 97 years, after being lovingly tended to by family and cared for by the nurses and staff at the Russell Personal Care Home. Her seven kids across three provinces each lit a candle to honor her final days and journey.
Every day Mom inspired us. She will be sadly missed by her seven children Jill Hanson, Nancy Hamilton (Patrick), Lynne Paulsen (Warren), Barbara MacDonald (Andy), Danny Knott (Donna), Joan Nixon (Gordon) and Billy Knott (Paulette), by her grandkids Kevin Hanson, Connor Hanson (Colleen), Kim Hamilton (Owen), Michelle Backe (Dan), Scott Hamilton (Hannah), Aidan MacDonald, Tyler Knott, Stacey Knott (Jon), Kyle Nixon (Jaimee) and Brock Nixon (Nikki), as well as her great grandchildren Olivia Hanson, Elliott and Theo Van Walleghem, Ainsley Backe, Adam and Aidan Knott, Caius Hamilton, Cami Nixon and Colbie Nixon.
Peggy was predeceased by her devoted husband, Cameron Knott, in 2014, eldest son, Tom Knott, in 2013 and her son-in-law, Ron Hanson in 2017. She also leaves to cherish her memory her two brothers, Kenny Spencer (Audree) and Bruce Spencer (Molly), and her lifelong nursing friend, Betty Spencer, as well as her close circle of friends in Gilbert Plains and Russell.
Born Margaret Joyce Spencer in Dauphin, MB in 1926, the eldest of seven siblings, Mom moved with her family to Gilbert Plains in 1943 where she met Cameron in Grade 12. Mom took her RN training at McKellar General Hospital in Fort William (now Thunder Bay), ON. Peggy and Cameron were married November, 1948 in Geraldton, ON where Dad was mining. Tom was born there. They moved to the Knott family farm, four miles south of G.P. in 1951 and raised eight kids among a whirlwind of chores (damn turkeys), 4-H, majorette and music lessons, baseball, hockey, skating, Sunday School and school projects. The Knott “Raisin Wagon” tore up and down those country roads all day, every day!
In 1975 Mom and Dad sold the farm and moved into town. Mom resumed her nursing career when youngest son Billy entered Kindergarten, and Dad managed the G.P. Co-op Service Station. Mom’s life of service included nursing at the G.P. Hospital retiring in 1986 at age 60, Home Care, the Heart Lifeline and Meals on Wheels. She was a dedicated 65 year member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gilbert Plains Legion Branch #98.
Avid sports fans, Mom and Dad followed the grandkids baseball and hockey circuit across the prairies, even to Prince Edward Island. Peggy enjoyed travelling from coast to coast by plane, train, bus and car including many trips to Winnipeg and Calgary to celebrate family milestones. When Dad sold his baseball card collection, he took her on a wonderful trip across Canada by train, although somehow she always had to provide the tips at mealtime. The Knott family reunions close to home were infamous for food and laughter, fun and games for family members of all ages.
Mom moved to Russell in September, 2021 to make it easier for Joan and Gordon to help her, which they did so selflessly, graciously hosting many visiting family members. Mom enjoyed reading, knitting, curling, golf, morning coffee with her girlfriends, The Jets, bingo, dominos, game shows, and Care Home activities, but most of all people! She was adored by staff who considered her a friend at the Russell Personal Care Home. Peggy “never met a stranger” and took a personal interest in everyone she met, treating them all with kindness and respect. She always had time for a visit.
If we take anything away from Mom’s rich life it is these three mantras that she lived by:
Be kind. Let go of critical and judgmental thoughts. Everyone has a place in the world.
Meet adversity with grace, dignity and resolve. Even humor. Just try your best, it will be enough.
Find joy every day. Go out. Housework can wait, it will always be there. Feel the fresh air and the sun on your face. Think warm thoughts. Talk to someone. Laugh with them.
We have hardly any photos of Peggy on her own because she was always surrounded by people – kids, grandkids, great grandkids, babies, in-laws, brothers, friends, staff – the center of attention, the life of the party. We’ll remember her best for her absolute joy in life. At her wishes, we will have a Celebration of Life in the summer when we will be ready to laugh and share the stories of our dear Mom, Gramma, Great Gramma, Sister and Friend. We plan to wear something bright and cheerful to celebrate her colorful sense of fashion and honor her life spent in “living color”.
Memorial donations in honor of Peggy Knott can be made to a charity of your choice including Diabetes, Cancer, Heart and Stroke or Cystic Fibrosis.
