MacKinnon,
Marie Pauline, 88, of Lower South River,
beloved wife and mother, died on Thursday, June 27, 2024, while in
palliative care at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
Antigonish, NS.
Born in
Margaree Forks, Inverness County, on April 28, 1936, Pauline was a
daughter of the late Mose and Marie (Doucet)
Chiasson.
Pauline
graduated from St. Martha’s School of Nursing in 1957 and
worked in New Mexico, Texas, and Wyoming, as well as St.
Mary’s Hospital in Inverness, NS, before marrying Joe
MacKinnon of Inverness in 1963. In 1973, Pauline and Joe moved their
family to Lower South River, Antigonish Co., and Pauline returned to
nursing part-time in 1976 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
retiring in 1994.
A beloved wife
and mother, Pauline is known to family and friends as joyful, kind,
generous, and full of laughter. She was an avid reader and wonderful
storyteller, full of fun and good humour, with a keen wit and delight
in recounting and listening to stories that capture the fun and
foolishness of our human life.
An Acadian,
Pauline was deeply proud of, grateful for, and devoted to the large
and loving Chiasson clan that she came from, and always in awe of her
mother who brought 16 children into the world and ran her home as
efficiently as a modern-day CEO; she is remembered by her in-laws as
regarding them as closely as she did her own clan. Fittingly, Pauline
passed during wild strawberry-picking time and will be delighting in
the abundance of hay fields that Heaven provides. In addition to her
joy and deeply loving spirit, she leaves a legacy of trusting in God
to provide for all aspects of life, which He has done in abundance
during these last years of Pauline’s decline in
health.
Pauline is
survived by Joe, her husband of 60 years, children Mary Anne
(L’Arche Antigonish); Dannie (Karen MacLean) and their sons
Calum and Rannie and Karen’s daughter Katie; Monica (Michael
McLean) and their sons John Michael and Joseph; and Lewis (Susan) and
their sons Nathan and Tyler, all of Halifax, NS; brother Lawrence
Chiasson, Dartmouth, NS; and 44 nieces and
nephews.
In addition to
her parents, she was predeceased by 14 of her 15 siblings, Rita;
Isadore; Alcide; Margaret; Leo; Gabriel (in infancy); Regina; Sr.
Antoinette, CSM; Gerard; Ephrem; Bertha; Elizabeth; Yvonne; and Emile;
as well as a niece and five nephews.
We are very
grateful to our father Joe who remained devoted to Mom, his
«Sweetheart,» throughout her illness and cared for her at
home as long as possible, ensuring her comfort and health at home, and
visiting her daily while in care in Antigonish, and at least twice a
week while she lived in Sherbrooke. While it is not possible to name
all the friends, family, and neighbours who continued to bring joy to
the MacKinnon’s during Pauline’s declining health these past
years, Joe and his children want to acknowledge the support and
friendship of L’Arche Antigonish, which has created a home
away from home for Mary Anne for the past 24 years; the MacIntosh
family; Pauline’s niece Lucille White, who spent
three-and-a-half years helping Joe and Pauline while Pauline still
lived at home, and whose own joy and good humour matches
Pauline’s; the Home Care nurses and caregivers that assisted
Pauline at home; the nurses and staff who cared for Pauline at High
Crest Nursing Home in Sherbrooke for 15 months; more recently, the
nurses and staff at Mary’s Court in Antigonish; and the
nurses, doctors, and staff at St. Martha’s Emergency, PCU,
Palliative Care, and Pastoral Care units, in her final days. Pauline
was an attentive caregiver when she worked as a nurse and she would
have been delighted to see not only the competency and compassion of
the nurses who cared for her at St. Martha’s, but the
joyfulness, fun, and camaraderie that they
share.
Visitation
will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at C.L.
Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish, NS. Funeral Mass
will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at 11 a.m., in St. Andrews
Church, St. Andrews, NS with Reverend Dennis Lamey presiding. Burial
to follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of
flowers, donations in memory of Pauline may be made to
L’Arche Antigonish.

Rejoice!»
