RICHERT: Paul-Gerhard
November 10, 1932 – December 14, 2023
It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Paul Gerhard Richert at 91 years of age. Paul was born on February 21, 1932 in Grünz, Germany to parents Paul and Frieda Richert. Paul grew up on a farm at Milow, Germany. Paul held many fond memories of the farm including a love of horses that he carried forever.
Paul immigrated to Canada at the young age of 19 from Germany. Unable to speak English, immigration at the time offered him job placement as a farmer, a lumberjack or a miner. He chose mining, a lifelong career that would take him from coast to coast, with his final stop at the then Noranda Potash Mine at Colonsay, instead of a change of careers into mechanical engineering. His drive for perfection showed in his work, his daily life, and his hobbies of hunting, photography, carpentry, and passionately gardening. He also maintained a keen interest in current affairs, politics, debating and wildlife. Paul respected a hard work ethic – when there was work to do, it came first, and this was instilled in him at a young age. Paul took great pride in being able to provide for the family or as he would say “put food on the table”, and his gardening skills were impressive to many. Making sure every inch of soil was utilized properly and cared for always ensured that there was plenty of harvest to enjoy. The Christmas gift of homegrown and brewed elderberry syrup was truly the epitome of his talents, patience for perfection, and his ‘why can’t I do it’ attitude. In later years, he self-taught himself to be a fine woodworking craftsman with many family and friends benefiting from his beautiful gifts. Enjoying travel, much research would be done to plan the route and many car trips across North America, as well as internationally, were taken.
Many thought he was a quiet man, but behind the stern eyes were seas of adventures and stories too many to tell here. Although quiet at times, he truly enjoyed family get togethers. Fine wine to go with a nice meal was often enjoyed and special occasions meant a special meal should go with it.
Survived by his wife of 65 years, Lise, four children – Vicki Richert, Alan (Sheri) Richert, Robbie (Karen) Richert, and Sandi (Delmar) McCallum, 14 grandchildren – Jennifer (Aleks) Smith, Michael Smith, Leanne Smith, Lucas Richert, Shelby (TJ) Richert, Cassidy Richert, Chantal (Steve) Aird, Daniel (Robin) Richert, David Richert, Jakob (Gine) Richert, Christina Richert, Anna Richert, Jesse (Kevin) McCallum and Katlin (Tim) McCallum and 6 great grandchildren, Natalie, Leila, Olivia, Harvey, Walter, Lena.
At Paul’s request, no funeral service will be held.
