Paul David Cleaves, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and treasured fine arts teacher, passed away suddenly on September 15, 2024, in Woodstock Ontario, at the age of 80. He was born on October 20, 1943, in Brantford, Ontario.
Known for his selflessness and love, Paul was a true family man. His wife, Margaret Elizabeth Cleaves (née Bardwell), was his lifelong partner. Together, they raised their three children – Andrea Misener (Stephen), Amy Cleaves (Matt Mitchell), and Allison Cleaves (Tom Lipscomb). Paul was dedicated to his family, including his grandchildren, Beth, Emily, Clara, Meg, Elijah, and Alyssa, who were the lights of his life. He cherished every moment with them, and was a constant source of stability and warmth. Paul’s unwavering support was the foundation upon which his family thrived. His life was a living example of the words that best describe him: selfless, loving, and creative.
Many will remember Paul as a talented artist and teacher. A gifted painter, he captured the beauty of landscapes with his masterful use of watercolours, while also exploring acrylics and mixed media. His love for painting was not only a personal passion, but a legacy he eagerly shared with his children, grandchildren, and students. Paul started his teaching career by earning an education certification at Hamilton Teacher’s College in 1966, followed by a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1973. He began teaching in elementary school, before joining Huron Park High School in 1974 as a fine arts teacher. But Paul was more than an educator; he was a guiding light who understood the challenges his students faced. With a heart full of empathy and the ability to empower, Paul left a mark on countless young lives.
Paul and Margaret were active members of the Woodstock Baptist church, where many had the chance to know Paul and his gentle spirit and compassionate nature. He will be profoundly missed, yet his influence will continue to resonate in the lives he touched.
As we say goodbye to Paul, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. His memory will be cherished, and his teachings will live on, not only through his family but also through his countless students. He will be lovingly remembered as a man who made the world a more beautiful and compassionate place, one student, one painting, and one act of kindness at a time.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at Brock and Visser Funeral Home (845 Devonshire Ave. 519-539-0004). Private funeral to follow Monday 11:00 am for family and close friends (will be live streamed)
