It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our father Patrick Roy Hickey of Fredericton, NB on Thursday, November 28th, 2024, at the age of 84. Pat was born March 17th, 1940, in
Fredericton, New Brunswick. He was the eldest son of the late Roy and Georgina Hickey, and was just a young teen in Minto, NB, when his father passed away. Forced to grow up quickly he became a father
figure within the home and immediately started helping his mother provide for the family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by our mother, Linda, his brother Murray Hickey, and his sister Donna
Marquis.
Dad is survived by his youngest brother Greg Hickey, his son Roy Hickey (Marion Hiltz), and two daughters, Charlene Hickey (Derek Gallant) and Rosalind Hickey (Stephen Oakes). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Ashley Bell (Cody Bell), Alex Garnett, Danielle Hickey (Jessie Brassard), Dylan Oakes, (Sarah Psihogios), Cameron Hickey, several nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous friends -especially his friends from out at Little River.
Dad spent his formative years in Minto, New Brunswick until heading back to Fredericton to attend the University of New Brunswick, where he graduated in 1964 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After a
brief stint in Montreal, he headed back home and started his career at NB Power. On June 29, 1968, Dad then married the love of his life, Linda (Austin) of Minto, and they spent 50 happy years together before
her death on March 16, 2019. She too will be celebrated with our father.
Dad always felt fortunate to have worked at NB Power for the entirety of his career and was instrumental in the design and construction of major infrastructure developments including Eel River, Dalhousie, Point Lepreau, Belledune, and the province’s energy grid. Following his career at NB Power he pivoted to a second “career” as a hobby welder and project specialist, building and rebuilding anything he put his mind to. His mechanical and technical knowledge, coupled with his resourcefulness, were legendary among those who entered his sphere.
Dad was graced with superb intelligence, infinite patience, and carried a loving and gentle manner with his children, he was a wonderful father. He loved and cared deeply for his wife Linda and the two of them enjoyed retirement together listening to music along the river at the house, snowmobiling at the Camp, and spending time with their children and grandchildren. He made and maintained extremely close connections with all his grandchildren, and was always there to support them in their activities. He was a great force in their lives
and loved them all unconditionally. He was always available to listen and offer words of wisdom and advice.
He enjoyed spending time at his Camp at Little River, NB, and loved the friendships he made there over decades of canoeing and backcountry snowmobiling. More than anything though, dad loved spending time
surrounded by his family. He brought us all together for meals, music, canoe trips, time at the woodlot, and an annual obligation to attend Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations at Dolans Pub. He took this obligation seriously.
Dad was well loved, and he loved well. We will miss him dearly.
To celebrate the lives of our mom and dad, Pat and Linda Hickey, the Fredericton Loyalist Rugby Club, 20 Cityview Avenue, Fredericton, NB, will be open to drop-ins for a pint or tea from 1pm – 4pm on Saturday,
December 7th, 2024. No other arrangements have been made at the request of our father.
