O’Leary, Patrick
Basil, 71, of Frankville passed away peacefully on
Saturday, October 5th in St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving
family.
Born in Salut
St. Marie, Ontario he was a son of the late Leonard Patrick
O’Leary and of Jean Francis (McLeod)
O’Leary.
A man of few
words, Pat found pleasure in hunting, fishing, gardening, and tending
his chickens, with his loyal dog Maggie in tow. He loved taking his
young family on camping trips in Guysborough, special memories for
both Debbie and Tanya. He worked for many years as
a mechanic, managing the Fina in Aulds Cove, and Hasting Auto, in Port
Hastings. It was at 51, though, that Pat decided
to go back to school to learn a new trade, earning a diploma in Pipe
Trade and eventually achieving his Red Seal as a
pipefitter. He was very proud of this
accomplishment.
Some of Pats
most content moments in life were with his grandchildren and great
grandchildren in their younger years. Whether rides on the lawn
tractor, roaming the yard and snacking on the apples from his many
apple trees, having a dance party with Kennedy, or, as all the older
grandchildren remember, sitting at the kitchen table, passing Papa Pat
the tubes, his love for them was evident. He took great pride in their
lives and achievements. He had a very special relationship with his
eldest grandson Daniel, for whom he would drop everything at a moments
notice.
Pat and his
wife Debbie shared many special memories over the years; as a young
couple Pat and Debbie loved the Interval dances; in later years they
enjoyed long drives and making day trips, just the two of them,
exploring our beautiful province. While Debbie recovered
from recent injuries, it was Pat’s deep love and
attentiveness that helped her through.
In that
respect the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,
Pat’s daughter Tanya was there for her dad through thick and
thin. She was his rock during his illness, taking him to all
of his appointments and caring for him over the last many
months.
Having just
celebrated 50 years of marriage in July, Pat is survived by his loving
wife Debbie; his children; Shaun (Kelly) Wood, Spruce Grove,
AB; Tanya (Marc) MacDonald, Arisaig; special grandson Daniel (Amy)
Mattie, Cape Jack; grandsons: Dylan, Jay and Lee;
granddaughters Hilary, Reagan, and Hannah; greatgrandchildren;
Kennedy, Brooks, Hayden, Parker, Avereah, Brynlee, Lilly, Macklan; his
mother Jean Francis O’Leary, Milford Haven Home for Special
Care; sister Dorothey (Wallace) Hendsbee, Half Island Cove; and
brother Dave O’Leary, Chilliwack,
BC.
Besides his
father, he is predeceased by son J.L. O’Leary who he dearly
missed, what a reunion they must be having; and parents-in-law Mary
and Jackie Wood.
Pat’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt
thank you to the Palliative Care team at St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital, especially to Dr. Chi and Dr. Rice whose
attentiveness and care gave both Pat and his family a sense of dignity
and comfort in his last
days.
Cremation has
taken place. There will be no visitation. Funereal
Mass will be held Thursday at 2:30pm at St. Paul’s Church,
Havre Boucher, Reverend Allan MacPhie presiding.
Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations
may be made to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Palliative
Care Unit or Cathy’s Place. Funeral Arrangements
are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home,
Antigonish. Online condolences:
