Patricia Diane «Pat» Kidston
The Maritimes has lost
a great horsewoman, who touched and changed
so many lives
as a coach, mentor, showman and friend.
Patricia Diane
«Pat» – 70 of Steam Mill passed peacefully at home
on the farm after a very courageous battle with cancer on Friday, May
10, 2024. Her beloved husband, Bob, and devoted sister, Pam, were by
her side throughout her ordeal. Born in Kentville, she was the
daughter of the late Ian and Joan (Montgomery) Baird. From a very
young age, Pat’s passion was her love of horses and she
fulfilled that dream her entire life. Pat received her first horse
«Pepper» from her parents when she was 12, and never looked
back! She had a keen eye for horses and the wonderful ability to match
horse and rider. Pat welcomed everyone into her barn to see and
discuss in depth all things «horse». Her entire life was
built on generosity, morals, passion and love – her love for
Bob, the farm and all her four-legged pets! Pat was a lifetime member
of the American Quarter Horse Association, received recognition from
the AQHA with a lifetime award for breeding American Quarter Horses,
member of the National Reining Horse Association, National Working Cow
Horse Association, held several positions on the Maritime Quarter
Horse Association, member of the Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada as
well the Maritime Club, competing successfully Nationally and
Internationally. Most recently Pat was the driving force behind the
formation of the Scotia Sliders Horse Association of which she was
President at the time of her passing. Pat remarked a short time ago
that she had no regrets, lived an enchanted life and did things her
way. A vacation usually included her show gear and a great horse, then
a return to her happy place – Encore Farm. A very special
thank you to all her friends who helped out at the stable during her
illness, as well as special thanks to paramedics, Whitney Young and
Les Card for enabling Pat to get to her stable and connect with her
horses one last time – a dream fulfilled! Many thanks to
doctors and the medical staff in Med A at the Valley Regional
Hospital, the Dickson Cancer Centre, Halifax, palliative care and VON
teams that supplied excellent care for Pat and enabled her to remain
at home and special care by the transportation units of EHS. She will
be forever missed by her husband of 50 years, Robert «Bob»
Kidston; twin sister, Pam Nickerson; sisters, Barbara Baird and Sheila
Baird (Luis); several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents,
she was predeceased by her brother, John in infancy and
brother-in-law, Hugh Nickerson. Cremation has taken place and in
keeping with Pat’s wishes there will be no service or
visitation. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, a
pet rescue of your choice or Operation Enhancement Campaign – Valley
Regional Hospital Foundation.
The maritime skies were
lit up that night by the Northern Lights,
seldom seen
here, as Angels in heaven were getting ready
for a special
soul who is now at peace and pain free.
God Bless
