It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of our precious Ma Totah Ma Owisò:kon Julia Thompson (née Lazore) at the age of 80 years. Resident of 1563 Island Road, Akwesasne, Ontario. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday December 31, 2023 at the Cornwall Community Hospital.
Born on January 1st, 1943 at home in Tsi Snaihne to Leo and Cecilia Lazore. Julia started quilting along with her mom, aunties, cousins and grandmother where they all gathered at the homestead in sugarbush. She was well known for her Star Blankets. She lived on St. Regis Island prior to moving to Cornwall Island in 1980. She lived a life following the old traditions, making baskets, quilting, gardening, canning, knitting and crochet. She enjoyed working has a psw for many years until retirement. She was always helping others in need. She was a member of the Akwesasne death benefits. She will always be remembered for her boldness, sassiness and quick wit
Julia married the love of her life Michael Thompson Sr. on February 20th, 1960. She is the loving mother of Mona Thompson, Velma Louise Cook (Lionel) both of Akwesasne, Andrea Thompson of Cornwall, Randall Thompson (Tara) of Akwesasne, Jacqueline Thompson of Cornwall, Micheline White (Todd), Christopher Thompson (Candy), Sarah Rose Thompson, Gary Kanoe Thompson all of Akwesasne, Sean Thompson (Darla) of Ohsweken and Shakorhare Thompson of Akwesasne. She will be greatly missed by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Julia is one of the biggest supporters of her children and grandchildren in any of their endeavors they embark on. She really loved visiting and talking on the phone with them.
Julia is survived by her siblings Goody , Doris Lazore, Emmy (Brian) Mitchell, Grace (Peter) Mitchell, Angus (Jackie) Lazore, Joe (Lucy) Lazore and Dorothy Lazore
Julia is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son “Kada” Micheal Thompson Jr. her grandsons; Rammy Randal Thompson Jr. and Justin Thompson, her siblings; Mary Diana Lazore, Joyce Sharrow and Frank Cook Jr. and by her nephews, Richard Re:Sis Lazore, Robert Mitchell, and Sako Resis Lazore.
Julia’s family will welcome family and friends at the Homestead 1563 Island Road, Akwesasne, Ontario from 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024. Julia will then be resting at Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall, Ontario from 9:30 a.m. Thursday, January 4th, 2024. Traditional words of acknowledgement of the passing of Julia will take place at Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall, ON, on Thursday, January 4th, 2024 at 11 a.m. followed by cremation.
