With saddened hearts the family of Olga Elvira Blomme (nee Vandezande) announce her passing on May 30, 2024.
Olga is survived by her children Chris (late Gloria Tenhunen), Steve (Riitta Hietala), Kim and Mike (Linda Rogers); twelve grandchildren Eva, Jason, Liisa, Greg, John, Matthew, Christopher, Samantha, Timothy, Shanna, David and Stephanie and twelve great-grandchildren; her two brothers Werner (late Magda) and family, Toni (Mimi) and family, dear nieces Jodi (Bob), Jo (Marc), Mattie (Gerrit) and nephew Luc (Magda) and many other nieces and nephews overseas in Belgium. Olga was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Edmond, and recently her daughter-in-law, Gloria, her parents Gaston and Gabrielle Vandezande; sisters Edith and Lily and brother Albert.
Olga was born in Ostend, Belgium on February 8, 1929. She had a happy early childhood but like many in Europe, her life was disrupted by the Second World War when her family was evacuated to England in 1940. Olga, at the age of 11, took responsibility of caring for her younger brothers and sisters while her father and older sister were in London. The family returned to Belgium after the war and Olga met Edmond in 1949 where they were both involved in a theatre group. Olga loved the movies, especially musicals which continued throughout her life. She and Edmond married on May 31, 1952 and their first son, Chris was born in 1953 and Steven in 1954. During this time in Belgium, they owned a bookstore in Oudenaarde called the Globe but in 1955, they took on a new adventure and emigrated to Ontario, Canada. Two more children, Kim and Michael were born in Canada and Olga was busy again with children. Olga loved the outdoors, gardening, a good book and animals and allowed her children to bring home all manner of creatures, wild and domestic, to be eventually set free or kept as pets. She faithfully baked four loaves of homemade bread weekly, singing while kneading and as a special treat, would make her famous Flemish waffles or Oliebollen, a Dutch beignet.
In 1978, Olga started her next adventure with Edmond when they bought 80 acres of land in Markstay, Ontario and started a hobby farm raising goats and chickens, living a country life enjoying the many wild birds and changing seasons and sharing many games (especially her favorite – Scrabble) and animal interactions with her growing family of grandchildren. They had finally achieved their original goal for immigration to Canada. They made many friends during their years there and always enjoyed visits and sharing a glass of sherry. Olga spent her last few years in Lively, Ontario where she made new friends but kept her lifelong friends and shared closer ties with many of her great-grandchildren. She was a happy, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, courageous in life and always looked for the silver lining.
Olga will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew her. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. A memorial celebration will be planned at a later time.
