It is with heavy hearts that the family of Norma Kathleen Meehan announce her passing on August 20, 2023 at the age of 84.
Predeceased by her husband and love of her life, James Cornelius Meehan (d. 1983). Beloved mother to her sons Michael (Julie), Thomas (predeceased), Stephen (Elizabeth) and only daughter Margaret (Randy). Cherished Grandma to grandson Mark and granddaughters Nicole (David) and Victoria.
Born in Campden Ontario, Norma was the third child of Ethel (d. 2003) and Gordon (d. 1967) Stoner. Predeceased by her sister Lois (Allen), brothers Murray (Pauline) and Lloyd. Lovingly remembered by her brothers George and Roger Stoner as well as many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Norma grew up on a farm in Campden Ontario with Lois and Murray. Her father worked many jobs far away and was gone for months at a time working to support the family. Three of her brothers came along many years later and created her love of caring for others. This was likely why she chose the vocation of nursing. She attended St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Hamilton graduating in 1960. While working as a nurse, she met the love of her life, Jim (d. 1983).
Norma and Jim married in June 1961 and quickly fiĺled their loving home with their four children. Family life was busy and Norma made every occasion special for her children whom she loved dearly. She took many pictures to help remember these occasions. Returning to work in 1974, Norma continued her vocation as a nurse until her retirement from Peel Memorial Hospital in 2000. Family remained the most important part of her life as her grandchildren filled her life. Through many ups and downs of life, Norma remained strong and resilient.
During the last five years of her life, she was cared for by the amazing staff at the Avalon Nursing Home in Orangeville. The family wishes to thank all the Avalon nurses, personal care workers and staff. With special thanks to the staff of the 2 North wing where Norma lived as she slowly succumbed to the cruel stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held for Norma at Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First St., Orangeville on Saturday September 30, 2023 at 11:00 am. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Norma’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Dufferin county, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Association or a charity of your choosing.
A tree will be planted in memory of Norma in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. Our 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
