Norma Richard Obituary
With broken hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mom, koko, great-koko, sister, aunt, godmother, and friend, Norma Jean Richard. Surrounded by the peace and love of her family, Norma began her journey to the spirit world on December 5, 2023 at the age of 59.
Norma was born on July 15, 1964, in Gladstone, MB. Norma dedicated over 30 years of her life to her love of teaching at Isaac Beaulieu Memorial School where she had the honour of educating nursery and kindergarten children over a generation. Many days were spent singing and laughing in the classroom, especially around the Christmas holidays. You would always find a place to sit and enjoy lunch or a snack in Norma’s room. The ambience of her classroom was welcoming, warm and inviting, for lunch or otherwise. Students and colleagues will remember her kind nature, wittiness and humour both in and out of the school setting.
Norma was a lover of hockey, all things Winnipeg Jets, and enjoyed the hockey mom lifestyle. Players and spectators at any hockey game would often hear her unmistakeable cheers from the stands to the players to “Goooo! Get it back!” She would often be spotted in the cheering section wearing her absolute favourite colour, purple.
She loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally and never failed to look after the grandbabies when they needed their Koko. She was especially proud of their accomplishments and made sure they felt special on any of their celebratory days. Koko Norma will be at the heart of all the memories of her children and grandchildren.
Norma was blessed with an incredible sense of humour. There was never a dull moment when she graced you with her presence. From impromptu trips with her sisters, road trip adventures with her children and grandchildren, life experiences with her partner-in-crime Georgina “Bugs Bunny Jones”, birthday parties and family events, to simple exchanges with family or friends, laughter was sure to be involved. Many would recall special memories such as stopping the car late at night to dance on the road, hilarious demonstrations of vivid storytelling, special nicknames she had for her grandchildren and extended family members, and witty commentary that would emerge without warning. She could tell you something with a straight face but then make you laugh in the same moment. This will be, perhaps, one of the most recognizable absences from our lives – the joy and laughter she gifted us with.
In what we imagine was a beautiful reunion, Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Harriet Richard; brothers, Edgar Richard, Victor Richard, and Thomas Richard; sister, Elizabeth Aitkens; sisters-in-law, Bernice Richard, and Catherine Richard; and her loving family dog, Cheech.
Norma will be remembered with love by her children, Tiffany, Valeen, Daniel “Cody” (Candace), Lauren (Fran), Presley (Aislyn), and Laurian “Kwedanchsen”; grandchildren, Echo, Syrus, Elmer, Justin Jr., Danita, Daelyn, Danelle “Nelly”, Chanel “Weewee”, Stephen “Sweetness”, Justice “Bob”, and Boone “Kidanchshunshun”; great-grandson, Kyler; siblings, Herman, Carol (Stanford), Sharon (Ernest), Larry, Myrna (Roger), and Derek (Dorothy); godchildren, Jaclyn Starr, Janice Roulette, Crystal Beaulieu, and Shauna Eastman.
Norma’s family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks to Ryan and the Palliative Care Team in Portage la Prairie; Dr. Nelson at Portage District General Hospital; and all of her family and friends for their love and support leading up to and beyond her passing.
