Noel, AKA – Dad, Pop, Grandad, G’Dad, Uncle Noel, was born in Toronto on December 21, 1939. His father, Harry, served in World Wars I and II. Harry married Monica Brown and they had 10 surviving children – Monica Stafford, Peter, Doreen Cormier, Irene Green, Donald, Robert, Bernard, Norman, and Catherine Heffernan. There were three children who died as infants: Michael, David and John. Harry also had two children, Katherine “Kitty” and Patrick, from his first marriage.
Noel grew up in Toronto near Dundas & Lansdowne and went to Ste. Helen’s Catholic School. As a kid, Noel and his friends would play in and around the trains across the street and apparently ate the ‘gum’ out of the sidewalk. In his teenage years, Noel and his friends frequented the Dunlan Restaurant which was a popular hangout at the time.
Around 1955, Noel started working as a printing press operator for Merker’s Printing. Most of his working years were spent working for Allcraft Products and he often worked two jobs to make ends meet.
Noel’s sister Doreen was married to Diane’s uncle Aubrey and in 1959, Noel and Diane met while visiting Doreen and Aubrey. Noel said he liked Diane “right from the start” and four years later, on March 23, 1963, they were married. In March 2023, Noel and Diane celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Noel and Diane had four children Paul (1964), Pamela (1966), Michelle (1967) and Chris (1971). Pamela was born with hydrocephalus and died when she was only five months old.
Noel was a fun-loving and friendly guy who never spoke negatively of anyone. He had a wonderful way of bringing humour into any situation. His heart was always willing to help when needed and was a support to his family whenever trials and challenges arose. His wisdom and guidance were always appreciated. He loved his family and enjoyed having all of them around often. Going to sporting events with his son Chris and family were highlights of his week.
Noel was well loved and loved well. He will be greatly missed.
