Nicole Beifuss Obituary
NICOLE TANYA ELIZABETH BEIFUSS
Oct 20, 1970 – Dec 3, 2023
Nicole Tanya Elizabeth Beifuss was born in Toronto on the 20th of October in 1970. Her family moved to Edmonton Alberta for the first few years of her life and then to Ottawa where she grew up. In school she was an accomplished athlete, exceptional at running the 100 m Sprint. She was a member of the Ottawa Kinsman Harriers Track Club until starting University.
She began attending Guelph University in 1990, in the veterinary program. While she was at school in Guelph, she met Lee, her husband-to-be, and together they moved to Ottawa where Nicole switched to Carleton University and the anthropology program. She achieved a Master’s degree in anthropology, personally specializing in forensics but was never able to secure a career in that field. Nicole and Lee decided to buy a property together in the countryside near Lanark Ontario and enjoy a hobby Farm, where they were married in 1998. Over the years, Nicole stocked her farm with chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, rabbits, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, fish and most recently, her most beloved Border collie Zeus. Every year, Nicole grew a substantial vegetable Garden, and did extensive canning in the fall. She had prepared an impressive cupboard full of food. The property is also teeming with wildlife that she always enjoyed watching and being close to. Nicole loved country life for that, among so many reasons.
Because of her love animals she took a job as Assistant Manager of the Lanark Animal Welfare Society and did her fair share of cleaning Kennels, grooming and adopting animals. Lee learned to construct buildings out of logs and together, he and Nicole began Highland Log Creations, building small log structures and cottages. Nicole was a natural at that job and they produced some memorable structures through the years. But, Nicole had aspirations of her own that she wanted to follow, and that was nursing. She wanted a job where she was helping others and made a difference. She was accepted to St Lawrence College nursing program and upon graduation, secured a job with Carleton Place Memorial Hospital on the med-surg floor. In 2012, after a couple of years working there, she became pregnant and gave birth to her son Emrys. A short while following her maternity leave, she got the opportunity for an exclusive nurse position at a family clinic. She was the right hand assisting nurse to doctor Louis O’Connell in Greely Ontario. Her patients adored her and praised her competent nursing skills, particularly with blood draws and injections, made quickly and painlessly almost every time. This job was her favourite of all.
In 2020, Nicole’s mother, Miriam Beifuss, passed away followed by her father Richard Beifuss, just 8 short months later. Nicole and her father had a very close relationship and together, they spent countless hours doing puzzles until the wee hours of the morning. Nicole gained a love of puzzles that she carried through to her very final day. But she had many hobbies that she liked to do. She was extremely creative and could physically manifest almost anything she conceived of, and did it in an exquisite way. She was a master at intricate hand weaving, amazing beadwork, Fine Jewellery from gold, silver and gemstones. From fine Hardwoods she hand carved bowls and spoons, mainly for the challenge and the fine result. Her work was beautiful and enjoyed by a number of people. One of her passions was cooking. She was proud to have been self-taught and could make delicious food from anything. Several seasons of cooking for tree planters in British Columbia were always a high point in her life, and that was on her bucket list to repeat.
Also on her Bucket List was another one of her deep Passions, rock climbing. Nicole loved to do the extreme and this was at the top of the list. Her best was a 5:11 free climb (look one up!), while carrying a backpack, at Mt. Assiniboine, B.C.. Also right at the top of her extreme list was camping which she did 12 months straight, in a Four Season tent in the side yard of her property. The spot she chose was no different from any wilderness campsite, except that it was home, with an extension cord. In her last few weeks, Nicole packed up her tent and moved back indoors, to enjoy a warm wood stove.
Nicole was not without her own personal demons, the worst of which was an eating disorder that she suffered for most of her life. That is what brought her to the precipice. The irreparable damage from a viral lung infection pushed her over the edge. Because of her never ending optimism and the “nurse” in her, Nicole believed that she could overcome the illness, but it was one of the very few things she could not personally control. After 2 weeks in intensive care and a team of doctors, Nicole lost her fight at 4:11 p.m. on December 3rd, 2023. She leaves behind her husband Lee Byerlay, their 11-year-old son Emrys, and her brother Stephen and his daughters, Elba and Lyra.
Nicole had wished to be cremated and have an online funeral.
