Nick died peacefully in Bracebridge on Saturday March 18, 2023. He was born Aug 3,1929 in New Toronto to Peter and Anastasia (Dejak) Stevens (Stefanyszyn). He developed his lifelong work ethic early, helping out in his family’s restaurant and starting a business making stuffed teddy bears and bicycle seat covers.
He received his BA from the University of Western Ontario and became a teacher, first in Athens ON, then Chapleau ON and finally settling in Huntsville, ON where he taught business and typing for many years at Huntsville High School. With his late wife, Eloise (Harkness), Nick built and ran three apartment buildings overlooking Huntsville’s main street.
Nick had a wide variety of interests. He was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and passionate about its culture and cuisine. He had a large record collection, mostly devoted to his beloved opera, was a keen bridge player and wine collector. He travelled extensively and enjoyed many winters in Mesa, Arizona. He was an active member of the Lions Club and a donor to many charitable causes. In addition to softball and baseball, he played in the Huntsville Old Timers’ Hockey League. He was a member of Huntsville Downs Golf Course where he played into his 90th year, an avid fisherman, and hunter.
Nick was the beloved husband of Carol (Bailey), loved father of David and his wife Bonnie (Port Sydney), Ruth Anne of Huntsville, Michael (Anne) of Perth, dear step-father of Melissa (Jason), Andrew (Polly), Matthew (Kim), Phillip (Melanie). Devoted grandfather to Ethan, Josh, Evan, Kirk, Danika, Jake, Kianna, Kaidyn, Mia and Nolan. Brother of the late Stella Raymond and sister-in-law Betty Fisher. Uncle of Debbie, John and Michael Raymond. He will be sorely missed by family and many friends.
The family would like to thank the staff of Castle Peak (Bracebridge), The Pines (Bracebridge) and the Bracebridge Hospital for the wonderful care they provided Nick this last year.
