Nicholas’ Obituary
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and a respected community member, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on July 17, 2024, at Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford, ON. He lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service, leaving behind a rich legacy. Nick is survived by his life’s love and wife of 64 years, Glayde Rizzo (nee. Cockburn). Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and family. He was a devoted father to his three children: Nick (Jo-Ann) Rizzo, Vicky (Cameron) Johnston, and Michael (Suzanne) Rizzo. He leaves behind a legacy in his seven grandchildren: Nicholas (Marissa), Alex (Eva), Michael (Danielle) Rizzo, Lindsay (Stefan), Caitlin (Daniel) Johnston, Christy, and Toby Rizzo. He also cherished his three generations of nieces and nephews. Nick was the second youngest of five siblings and is predeceased by Grace (Chuck) Ciancone, Charlie (Angie) Rizzo, Mary (Jim) Crechiolo, and Sam (Terry) Rizzo.
After over 40 years in the shoe business, Nick retired to pursue other ventures that allowed him to spend more time with his beloved wife and family. An avid builder, he started with his cottage and then constructed their family home, where they lived for over 50 years. Nick had a zest for life, evident in his love for skiing, running—completing over 30 marathons—his sports cars, and traveling with friends and family. However, his greatest passion was always the time he spent with his family.
A dedicated community member, Nick was involved with the Brantford Rotary Club for over 30 years. One of his significant accomplishments was founding the Brantford Classic Run. It began with Nick and a few friends running from Boston to Brantford, later adopted by the Rotary Club, and has raised over $3 million in its 40-year history, benefiting the Boys and Girls Club and Lansdowne Children’s Centre. Nick was also a founding father of the Lansdowne Children’s Centre and one of the founding directors of the Brant Community Foundation, marking him as a true pillar of the Brantford community.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dwayne D. Budgell Funeral Home where a Private Family Service was held on Monday July 22, 2024. The remarkable staff at Stedman Community Hospice went above and beyond in their care and compassion for Nick and his family in his final days, and we are eternally grateful for their dedication and support. In Nick’s memory and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Stedman Community Hospice in honour of the exceptional care they provided is gratefully appreciated by the family.
