CARGNELLI, Nelly (née Campeis)
1928-2023
On Tuesday, May 29, 1928, Giselda and Giuseppe Campeis, and the world, were blessed with the birth of their first daughter Nelly in Detroit, Michigan.
Giselda and Giuseppe returned to their homeland in Pinzano, Italy in 1930 with Nelly and their second daughter Mary in tow. These were to be difficult times as the great depression was impacting the world. Nelly grew up appreciating that the basics of life; food, shelter, clothing, and everyday household items which she learned not to taken for granted. Nelly never forgot those times and continued to value all that she had and was able to share – “Mangia, Mangia” was part of her philosophy. Then World War 2 began and Nelly was to witness unspeakable events and experience the meaning of survival.
The Campeis family grew with the births of three more girls. Nelly had the role of being the older sister to Mary, Alice, and Loretta which she gladly filled.
Then, at the age of 22, Nelly’s heart was won over by Amedeo Cargnelli. It was on Amedeo’s second visit to the dentist, where Nelly was the dentist assistant, that he proposed. Nelly had to ask permission from her parents and they agreed. Amedeo soon ventured off to Argentina for work before they were able to marry. Once he was established in Argentina they married via proxy and she then joined him shortly thereafter.
In 1954 they immigrated to Toronto, Canada where they began a family. Their son Walter was born in 1955, and 6 years later daughter Katherine arrived in 1961 completing their family.
Her husband, Amedeo, died very young in 1982 leaving Nelly to navigate the world on her own. Nelly’s struggles growing up during wartime gave her the strength and determination to carrying on no matter what life brought her way. She continued on as a dedicated and caring mother, daughter, sister, friend, and neighbor.
In 1987 Nelly officially became a Nonna with the birth of her first grandson Gianamedeo, followed in the years to come by Piero in 1989 and Stefano in 1990. They were all her pride and joy and a good reason to brag.
She was a devote Catholic attending Our Lady of Victory parish for 59 years. She also enjoyed her weekly adventures to her second church Woodbine Casino and bingo nights with Hilda at Pelmo Park Community Centre.
Over the course of her long life Nelly had the pleasure of serving her community as the lunch room attendant and secretarial assistant at Bala Avenue Public School and volunteering at West Park Hospital.
In her later life she enjoyed the simpler things – her family, her Italian programs, and her cooking. When it came to her cooking she never accepted a ‘No’, it was always “Mangia, Mangia”. Nelly was a fabulous cook a trait she passed on to both her children.
She was an exceptional daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of having Nelly (Nonna) in their life.
She is survived by her loving children Walter (Susan) and Katherine; Katherine’s sons Gianamedeo, Piero (Ashley), and Stefano (Karla), and soon-to-be great grandchild (she predicts a boy); her God daughter Sonia Tramontin and long-time friend Silvana Tramontin; nephews and nieces Paolo and Gloria (Mary’s children), and John, Steven, and Michelle (Alice’s children); her companion and caregiver Elizabeth Laurente, and Wojtek Szamra for his support.
She joined her late husband Amedeo, her sisters Mary, Alice, and Loretta, nephew Daniele and her parents Giselda and Giuseppe on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.
Resting at NEWEDIUK FUNERAL HOME, KIPLING CHAPEL, 2058 Kipling Avenue (North of Rexdale Boulevard) on Saturday, July 8, 2023 from 10 a.m. until prayers in the chapel at 11 a.m. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery. Online condolences at newediukfuneralhome.com
