It is with deep sadness that the family of Naomi Kassie announces her passing on Friday, December 29, 2023. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, she graduated with honours from the University of Alberta and moved to Montreal to advance her singing career, where she met the love of her life, Humphrey Kassie. Survived by her beloved children and their spouses, Lynne Kassie and Issie Weissglas, David Kassie and Susan Harris, Gail Kassie and Neil Matin; her cherished grandchildren, Allyson Kassie and Steven Goldberg; Caroline Kassie and Ricky Van Veen, Emily Kassie; Samantha Matin and Brian Segal, Jamie Matin and Mark Duffield, and Katherine Matin; and by her adored great-grandchildren that she we was so proud of – Charlotte, Kamryn and Devyn Goldberg; Mathew, Nathan and Ellie Segal; and Camille Van Veen. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Humphrey, her parents, Dr. Eli and Charlotte Wershof, her siblings, Queena Klein, Cecil Wershof (Audrey), and by her brothers- and sisters-in-law. She will be deeply missed by her special cousins, Judy, Elliot, and Peter, and by her many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Heartfelt gratitude to Beth, Nova and Bing for their extraordinary devotion and care.
Naomi Kassie was deeply involved in music, community, and family. She was a soprano who performed regularly at the McGill Opera Workshop and gave many concerts. Naomi was very active at the Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue, was a president of Sisterhood and named Eshes Chayill and chaired the Shaar Leisure Institute for decades. She taught music appreciation at the McGill Continuing Education, was an avid golfer and was a president of the woman’s board of Elmridge. She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Humphrey, and is surely singing with the angels.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Sunday, December 31 at 12:00 noon. Burial at Congregation Shaar Hashomayim Cemetery, 1250 ch. de la Forêt. Shiva at 4700 Sainte-Catherine St. W. #314 Sunday and Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Contributions in Naomi’s memory may be made to Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, (514) 937-9471.
