It is with heavy hearts that we, the loving family of Nancy Whitney-Latham, regretfully announce her peaceful passing on Monday, May 29, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born July 26, 1951, in Glace Bay, she was the beloved daughter of the late Gilbert “Gib” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Lynk) Whitney.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents and beloved niece, Jessica Dale Whitney, daughter of brother, Dale (Ann Marie).
Nancy is survived by her husband, Keith; daughter, Angela Joanne Duhamel (Colin Appleton), Glace Bay; son, Paul Mathew Duhamel (Margaret Gibbs), Edmonton, step-sons, Bradley Latham, Sydney, Fraser Latham, Sydney and Daniel Latham (Carolyn), Victoria Mines; grandchildren, Bethany Rachael Reid, Halifax and Emily Lynn Ferris, Reserve Mines; many honorary grandchildren that she considered her own; sister, Frances Muldoon, Ontario; brothers, Gary (Jackie) Whitney, Glace Bay and Dale (Ann Marie) Whitney, Oshawa; nieces, Andrea, BC, Garilyn, Ontario, Sarah and Hannah, both in Ontario.
As the daughter of well-known orchestra leader, Gib Whitney, Nancy was an incredible musician and singer from a very young age. She began sharing her talents at the age of only 12, playing organ for services at Newsom United Church, Glace Bay. She later became organist and choir director at Epworth United Church, Glace Bay for many years. She later founded the Glace Bay and Area Firefighters’ Choir, in which she was director and accompanist. Nancy was also well-known for her beautiful singing voice, lending her talents to the Breton Bells choral ensemble and later Island Voices under the direction of the late Jimmie MacNeil, who was a dear friend. Her limitless passion for music could be heard, seen and felt with every note she shared.
Through her time in the church, Nancy developed an interest in ministry, returning to school at the age of 50 to become a lay pastoral minister. Her sermons were very well received by her cherished congregations. Nancy made her services meaningful, putting into each sermon much love, wisdom, and always a touch of humour. She especially loved her time living and ministering in Marion Bridge. There, she travelled each Sunday to Bethel United Church in Marion Bridge, Zion Wesley United Church in Gabarus Lake and Forchu United in Forchu. It was among these congregations that she made many lasting friendships, and cherished memories which she held very dear.
Nancy was known by many names. She was proud to have been given the honourary indigenous title of ‘Flying Eagle Woman’; but was known as ‘Ma’, ‘Nowgie’, and ‘Nanook’ to her children and grandchildren. Each of us has countless memories of special times shared with her. She was always ready to lend an ear during trying times, imparting her famously wise advice and wit to all who needed it. We will all miss picking up the phone to hear, «What’s up duck?» on the other end.
Nancy will be fondly remembered by the many friends and acquaintances who she considered like family. She made us laugh, sometimes brought a tear to the eye, comforted us in times of sorrow, and always knew how to lighten our hearts and show us the bright side, even in times of great darkness. A soul never to be forgotten by any who met her through her music, ministry, AA fellowship, or just passing on the street. ‘Everyone was someone’s baby once’ was her universal of acceptance and caring for all.
In the interest of ensuring family members from away are able to attend, funeral arrangements and dates will be announced at a later date.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
