Nancy’s Obituary
Nancy died peacefully, but unexpectedly on Monday January 16, 2023 in Glasgow Scotland, just shy of her 75th birthday. She had met, and was handling, a number of health issues head on. Several complications due to diabetes contributed to her recent medical challenges.
She dealt with life through a wicked sense of humour. Most recently, she called her regular Monday night phone-call-cousin in Canada to say, “l’m not calling you next Monday; I’m waiting for an ambulance to take me to hospital”. That last hospital stay brought her face to face with at least one colleague from her days teaching at Southern General Hospital, where her formal nursing training began in 1972. After graduating from BCI, she started working in the Central Sterile Room at Brantford General Hospital. That sparked her interest in the medical field, and when she had the opportunity to move to Scotland to train, she took it, arriving in Glasgow, January 3, 1972. Glasgow was her home since that time.
Following her 1975 graduation as a Registered General Nurse, she also trained in midwifery; as a mental health nurse she worked in the Alcohol rehab unit; and in 1983, turned to teaching at the Glasgow College of Technology. While working full time, between 1984 and 1991, she earned a Bachelor of Arts at the Open University. Before retiring she was a Nurse Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonia University, but “retirement”, as she often told friends, “was the best job she ever had!”
She was the older daughter of and predeceased by, George and Betty (Creath) Ott and sister to Debbie, who died suddenly in July 2022. She had a passion for cats and donkeys. There was always a cat to share her life and her charitable donations were directed to the care of donkeys.
Following her funeral in Glasgow, close friends will take her ashes to their final resting place in Kinsale, Ireland, where she vacationed for more than 30 years.
