It is with great sorrow that we share our sister Nancy passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. It is difficult to find the words to adequately convey the character of a person and why they were so loved, but we will try.
Nancy Jean was born on June 11, 1954 to Andrew and Verna McClure, the eldest of four on a farm, in what was formerly called Elders’ Mills. Growing up, Nancy did the typical farm kid things running the gamut from driving a tractor at an absurdly early age to perfecting baking and entering it in the fall fair. With the “McClure 7” cousins we shared many baseball games in the pasture, trudged along frozen fields for pond skating and together with Grandma McClure’s help became euchre experts. From an early age, summers for the kids were an exciting time with holidays at various cousins’ farms which Nancy particularly enjoyed. Being the eldest, one of Nancy’s responsibilities was to mind her younger siblings. We take full credit for helping her hone her forbearance skills. Nancy had a passion for the arts and particularly enjoyed many forms of music, concerts, live theatre and particularly musicals. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and later in life took up the violin.
The skills that made Nancy a special person were present at a very young age. A compassionate and selfless caregiver. A quiet and self-contained individual with exceptional listening skills. Intuitive and wise beyond her years. An incredible knack to make everyone feel like they were singularly the most important person to her. Nancy unobtrusively catalogued everyone’s preferences and it gave her great pleasure to find that special something or bake that particular dessert and deliver it with a wink and a hug. She had a fabulous sense of humour and the most beautiful belly laugh that will be dearly missed.
Nancy graduated from Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing and was the most fulfilled when providing direct patient care. She received many notes from patients and families throughout her career for her kindness, caring and sincere empathy.
Predeceased by the love of her life – Daniel (Buddy) Ingrouville – Nancy often described the simple pleasures they enjoyed in the same way others might describe a trip around the world. The stops for coffee and splitting a scone, a stroll on the boardwalk, trips to Gaspé, doing crosswords, having breakfast at Shopsy’s or watching ships come into the harbour were just a few of the simple pleasures they enjoyed together. It was difficult for Nancy that COVID prevented a celebration of a life for Buddy and took great comfort in the love and support from the Ingrouville families during that time. Nancy will be dearly missed by Cindy and Miguel Cysneiros, and Daniel and Jane Ingrouville.
Nancy was a cherished Aunt, Great Aunt and integral member of the family to John (Karen) McClure, Jack and Jessica McClure; Jamie McClure; Nancy and Keith Thomson, William, Ruth and Andrew Thomson; Jennifer Mastromattei; Thomas Mastromattei and Catriona Hoy; Bec Rose and Cameron Benns; Colin and Janice Davidson, Jack Davidson; Cameron Davidson and Sheree Unrau, Hailey Unrau, Tucker and Carter Davidson; Michael Cysneiros; David and Dayle Cysneiros; Kaelyn and Ben Perryman, Reggie, Hudson and George Perryman; and Madeline Ingrouville. Nancy is predeceased by her much-loved great niece Grace Thomson. She was incredibly proud of this bunch and loved being a part of their lives.
Nancy leaves a void that cannot be filled yet we have so many wonderful memories to soften the sharp edges of our grief. She loved us all unconditionally. She had many unfulfilled dreams cut short by her illness yet felt they could still be accomplished through her loved ones by simply thinking of how much joy she would have as they go about their adventures big and small.
We believe that Nancy received some of the goodness that she put out in the world and want to thank the many people who bolstered, cared for and sustained her during her illness. Thank you to the lifelong family friends, cousins, second cousins, first cousins once removed, nursing colleagues, neighbours and church friends who sent messages sharing memories, support and words of love. While she often didn’t have the energy to respond, she read them all and gleaned energy, resolve and optimism from you.
Nancy had the dream team of health care providers. If you remember seeing Nancy during her medical care, know that she wrote your name on a piece of paper and tucked it away somewhere hoping one day to write a note of thanks for all that you did for her. A heartfelt thank you to the skilled and remarkable Doctors Ruth Hussman, Reeta Barua and Gary May. Thank you to the extraordinary Michael Garron Oncology team and particularly to Princy, Marguerite and Lida. You were the reason treatment days were bearable. Dr. Lillian Robinson and Dr. Rebecca Colman we will be forever grateful for the exceptional palliative care you provided. To Tandi Briggs from Temmy Latner and all of the nurses and caregivers at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital you made her last days as comfortable and peaceful as possible. Kate Cook you were a lifeline for Nancy. Thank you.
There will be a celebration of life for Nancy and Daniel (Buddy) Ingrouville at Pine Hills Funeral Centre, 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough on Tuesday, April 16th. Live streaming at Pine Hills website on the day of service. Visitation with the family at 10 am followed by a service at 11 am and light lunch. Private interment at Vaughan Knox Cemetery.
Nancy spent a lifetime giving to others with donations, time, and deeds and quietly encouraged others to do the same. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care or Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital Palliative Care Unit by calling Lindsey at 416-461-8252 ext 2057. there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, ‘Here she comes!’”
