With great sadness, the family of Nancy Gordon Croil announce her sudden passing at Sunnybrook Hospital on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.
Nancy was born on November 5, 1948 in Toronto, Ontario, to Bill Reid and Marg Reid (nee Polley). Nancy’s childhood – and the rest of her life – were deeply impacted when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 10. Nonetheless, she did well academically graduating from York University with an MBA in her early 20’s. She subsequently found employment at the Ontario Ministry of Health where she worked for a number of years before taking early retirement.
Nancy married Tom Croil, a professional engineer. They settled in North Toronto and enjoyed traveling together. The adventures they liked most were bicycle tours in France where they enjoyed the countryside and sampled the local cuisine and wine. Sadly, Tom passed away in 2022.
Nancy had a very independent spirit. She was a force to be reckoned with and would not hesitate to set you straight if she felt wronged. Our family is most grateful to Nancy’s neighbour and good friend (since childhood), Kit Parkinson, who stuck with Nancy through thick and thin. She was always there for Nancy offering unwavering kindness and support.
Nancy loved working in the garden and created amazing flower displays at her homes. She also volunteered at Edwards Gardens in North York and was a member of the Garden Club of Toronto. Her love of gardening led her to enroll in the landscape design program at Ryerson University.
Nancy also loved animals – especially cats. She has asked that her ashes be scattered with those of Muffin, her calico cat who passed away some time ago.
Nancy suffered a mild stroke in 2023 but did not allow the resulting impairment to affect her independence.
She is survived by her brother Blake and his five children.
Nancy did not wish to have a funeral.
