Nadine Jean MacDonald was born at home in Wallaceburg Ontario in January of 1929. She passed peacefully at CKHA on February 22, 2024 at the age of 95.
Nadine was the daughter of Willis and Beatrice Thompson. She is now reunited with her beloved husband Paul (1994) and son Stuart (1967).
She is survived by her son Dr. Grant ‘Sandy’ MacDonald of Atlanta GA, daughter Suzanne MacDonald-Simcox ( Terry) of Arnes MB, and dear friends Moira and Brad Eggett and family who she loved as her own.
She is also survived by her “baby” brother Doug and sister-in law Anne Thompson of Meaford, Ontario as well as many nieces and nephews and several great and great -great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sisters Mary, Donna and Maxine.
Nadine started her working career as a switchboard operator at Bell Telephone in 1947. She then became assistant pay master at the Wallaceburg Brass factory for many years. She and Paul lived at and raised their family in Mitchell’s Bay where they lived their entire married life. In 1963, Nadine started her most important and cherished career …a full time mother to her children. As the wife of a commercial fisherman she made a loving and nurturing home.
Through her adult life she was a member of St Stephen’s Church Mitchell’s Bay, and was very active in the Anglican Church serving in many capacities namely being on the Alter guild, active in the ACW and the Chatham Kent Deanery and in Synod in London. She was also involved in the Dresden Community Church.
She was an active canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society going door to door every April for years. She was very passionate about mission work with one of her favorite missions making up care packages to send to Uganda. Her achievement that she was most proud of was starting a Bereaved Parents Group in the early 1970’s that provided support to other parents suffering the loss of a child. At that time, no such group existed. Losing her 3 year old son had such a devastating and profound impact on her life. However, she was able to do something good as a result, as this group is still active today.
She loved to cook and bake….who could forget her famous Bundt cakes! She loved to travel, was an avid reader and an artist who loved to sketch and paint. She even became savvy on an iPad well into her 90’s! She always loved a good party and loved a good Margarita even more! She had a wonderful sense of humor. Her ability to talk to anyone was effortless.
The funeral for Nadine will be held at Christ Church, 80 Wellington St. W. in Chatham on Saturday March 2 at 11 am with viewing/visitation starting at 10 am. A celebration of Nadine will follow at Mama Maria’s Ristorante at 231 King St. in Chatham following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army through the Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg 519.627.3231. Cherished stories and tributes may be left for the family at www.CavanaghFuneralHome.ca
