MYRTLE LAURA MAIN
Myrtle Laura Main (nee Hartviksen) passed away peacefully with her family by her side on February 17, 2023 at the Extended Care Wing of the Atikokan General Hospital.
Myrtle was born in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) on April 27, 1928 to Ingrid and Jens Hartviksen; graduated grade 12 in 1945 and married Bob Main in 1953. Bob’s employment took them from Winnipeg to Kimberley BC, Manitouwadge and eventually to their much beloved home of Atikokan where deep and proud roots were set for 55 years. She excelled at numerous jobs including at Ontario Hydro, insurance companies, Caland Ore, and even The Atikokan Progress newspaper. Her true talent and passion was growing beauty from seed. Myrtle enjoyed her garden and worked alongside her husband Bob every chance available. Myrtle’s ‘seeds’ of love, empathy and compassion have been woven into the fabric of our families, friends, the community and her devotion to the Lutheran Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Kerry (Grace) of Yarmouth NS, Richard (Laurie-Ann) of Thunder Bay, ON, Dean (Cathy) of Terrace Bay, ON and Heather (Brian) McLeod of Atikokan, ON, 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Myrtle was truly the ‘wind beneath our wings’.
Myrtle was predeceased by her loving husband Robert (Bob) Main, her parents Ingrid and Jens Hartviksen, brothers Ivan, Rudy, sisters, Aslaug, Ida, Elaine, and grandson Scott Main.
Many thanks to the compassionate and caring staff at the Atikokan General Hospital.
Funeral service will occur on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 11:00am at Faith Lutheran Church in Atikokan followed by a luncheon at the Pioneer Centre. Family only interment will occur.
In lieu of flowers, Myrtle would appreciate donations be made to Atikokan General Hospital – Extended Care Wing or Faith Lutheran Church Atikokan.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street, Thunder Bay.
