It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Myrna Jean Stone on March 28, 2024 at the Richmond Villa Senior’s home in St. Peters, Nova Scotia.
Myrna had a strong sense of service to her community. Shortly after relocating to Port Hawkesbury in 1971, she noticed a risk to children who had to cross an intersection at a major throughfare to return home from school each day. She became a cross-walk guard there and later convinced the town to install a crossing light at that same intersection. Her interest in community service led her to be elected as a Port Hawkesbury town councillor where she served in that capacity for over a decade. She was the first woman councilor in an era where women’s voices were not always fully heard. Hers was, she got things done.
She liked to help others and loved working with younger people. Her first job was teaching children at a small school in Evanston. Later, she worked at the local tourist bureau in Port Hawkesbury as a service agent and soon became the manager for many years. This was one of her favorite jobs, she would always say, as it afforded her the opportunity to work with younger people. She loved their views on life. Together they had many laughs and she made lifelong friends. Myrna had a fondness for cats and would often be seen with “her” cat from The Villa in her room.
Myrna was very fond of her extended family in the St. Peter’s area. A place where she visited almost weekly with her husband Davy, where she would eventually return to spend her final years.
Myrna was predeceased by her father (John Cogswell), mother (Evangeline Cogswell), brother (Dave Cogswell), husband (David F Stone), and daughter (Justina M Lewis). She is survived by her son David (Frances) Stone, granddaughters Evangeline Stone and Charlotte Stone, and grandson Michael Lewis.
Special thanks to Myrna’s niece, Dianne Boudreau, for her loving support and commitment to Myrna throughout her life and to Dr. Collins and the team at Richmond Villa for their kind and compassionate care.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 11am, from St. Peter’s Parish, St. Peter’s ; Rev. John Yake officiating. Interment to take place at a later date.
