Myrna Milljour (Bell)
Mom passed away peacefully at Rock Lake Hospital on Thursday, December 7th. She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Irene, her husband Raymond (Bud), her sons Grant and Kent and her grandson Jacob. Left behind to miss her and mourn her passing are Brad (Karen), Connie (Brad), daughters-in-law Kim and Olga, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mom was born in 1934 in Coulter, MB and over the last 89 years she lived a life that was active and fulfilling. Mom loved baseball. Growing up, she and her friends were frequently found playing ‘Queen and her Court’ softball with Mom as the Queen (pitcher). She loved those games and her competitive spirit remained alive and well as witnessed by many during future school picnics! CGIT (Canadian Girls in Training) was also an important part of Mom’s teenage years and she talked fondly of their get-togethers and competitions.
Mom attended Normal school in Winnipeg and when she graduated, she accepted her first teaching job in Hernefield, a town ‘close to home’. After teaching there for a couple of years, she opted to spread her wings a little further and accepted a position at a school in a tiny town called Snowflake. How was she to know at that time that once you teach in Snowflake, you stay in Snowflake! She and Dad were married in 1960 and because Dad was a school trustee, policy in place at the time prohibited her from continuing on as a full time teacher. All was well, however, as her time was easily consumed with being a Mom, a gardener, a part time educator, a farmer, a volunteer, a friend and a neighbour.
Mom was active in the Snowflake community for sixty years. Whether it was baseball, figure skating, hockey, curling or school picnics … if her kids were involved so was she. She sewed uniforms, created carnival costumes and made countless pies and 9×13” cakes for local events. Her faith and the United Church of Canada were an extremely important part of her life. She was a member of the tight knit Snowflake UCW group and was recognized as a life-long member in 1989.
After Dad passed away in 2008, Mom stayed on the farm until the fall of 2020 at which time she moved to Manitou. COVID was a complicating factor at that time and limited the amount of socialization that anyone could do but she adapted as everyone else had to. She started floor curling and we are sure that she enjoyed the fellowship during and after the game more than the game itself. She was able to enjoy the day trips that were arranged for Seniors and Manitou soon became ‘home’.
Mom was grateful for the blessings in her life, big or small. Whether it was her first cup of coffee in the morning, watching the trucks roll in and out of the yard or the arrival of robins each spring, Mom took it all in. Over and above the simple pleasures, however, was the love that she gave her family. From ’bunny buns’ to ‘have some more pie’, Mom always put her family first. Her love for all of us was deep and unconditional. She was always there to listen, to offer words of encouragement, to celebrate successes and support when things were not always ‘as planned’. There are no words that can adequately describe her love for us and for that, we are so, so, so grateful.
A celebration of Mom’s life will be held on Thursday, December 14th (2 pm) at St. Andrew’s United Church in Manitou. STARS Air Ambulance and South Central Cancer Resource are two charities that Mom always supported so in lieu of flowers, if you so wish, please make a donation in Mom’s memory to either of these organizations.
We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge and thank the staff at Rock Lake Hospital for the amazing care Mom received during her time there. We were truly blessed that such caring and compassionate health care professionals helped Mom through her final days.
