Murray Donald MacGray
It is with deep regret that the family of Murray Donald MacGray announce his passing at the age of 78 in Camp Hill, Halifax, Nova Scotia, on December 10, 2024. Murray was born in Port Arthur, (Thunder Bay) Ontario to Don and Marjorie MacGray (nee Holland) of Halifax. Growing up in Thunder Bay, Halifax, St. John’s and Ville D’Anjou (east end Montreal), he eventually relocated permanently to Halifax, at first to study and subsequently marry and help raise a family. He is survived by his wife Catherine (nee Covey), daughters Meredith (Ryan Backman), Courtney (Chris Cannon), Kathleen MacGray (Mark Bailey) and brother Gord. He was a devoted grandfather to Kate, Olivia, Emma, Luke, Emily and William. Murray was predeceased by his parents, Marjorie and Don MacGray, and sister Sandra Caldecoat
In addition to military training at Camp Borden, he began his undergraduate studies at Sir George Williams University in Montreal but soon transferred to St. Mary’s University and continued with post-graduate studies at Dalhousie University, earning a Masters in Public Administration. He and Cathy met while they were undergraduates at St. Mary’s University. It was in Halifax that Murray found his home thanks to Cathy. As fate would have it, Murray unknowingly embodied St. Mary’s University moto: “Age Quod Agis” …”What You Do, Do Well”. Throughout his life that was his attitude towards all activities that he participated in: sports, studies, work and good works. As a result of his work ethics, he achieved a long and distinguished career in Nova Scotia in various government positions, he retired as senior director and consultant on the Economic Development Aerospace and defense portfolio.
He was a lifelong avid and talented sports enthusiast. As a young man in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he was coached by Howie Meeker a former NHL player and colour commentor for Hockey Night in Canada. He played high school football in Montreal, track at university and in later years became a cyclist in and around Halifax. He passed along his interest in sports and he and Cathy encouraged their daughter’s interest in sports, accompanying their daughters to many provincial, interprovincial and national level soccer games. Music (preferably listened to at a rather intense level) was also a lifelong passion. His young daughters encouraged him to “Play some rock n’road, Daddy”. A mainly self-taught drummer, he learned to play by practicing in the basement of the family home in Ville D’Anjou by playing along to records. He and his first band played their first “gig” during high school for a teachers meeting: featuring a unique lineup of drums, bass and steel guitar. He was even spotted making a brief appearance on CBC TV Halifax as a member of a Pipe and Drum band featured at the ceremonies for the curling championship. Murray believed in giving back to the community and volunteered with many church and Knights of Columbus endeavours/committees.
Murray will be remembered fondly for his dedication to family, his dry wit, work ethic and positive outlook, (and of course his unusual enthusiasm for public speaking). Of all the roles in his life, his favourite was probably that of father and grandfather. He maintained a close relationship with his adult children and their extended families and loved spending time with the grandchildren. We will all miss his devotion to family and friends, strong presence and sense of humour. Above all, Murray’s ultimate legacy will carry on in the lives he enriched and the positivity he shared and encouraged.
A most heartfelt thank you to all the staff of Camp Hill Veterans Hospital who did so much to care for him over the last 19 months.
The Funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 19th, 2024 at 11:00am at St. Stephen’s Church, 6032 Normandy Drive, Halifax.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your preferred charity in Murray’s name.
