With sadness we announce the passing of Murray Berman, husband for 67 years to Esther Berman. Murray was born in Toronto October 25, 1932, the son of the late Mollie and Daniel Berman. He is predeceased by his twin brother Harvey (Gerbrig) and sisters Lily (Robbie) Abel and Ruth (Irving) Gotter. Murray was a devoted family man, a father to 4 daughters and a son and father-in-law to their spouses: Sharon and Dave Lebert, Dede and Mike Flanagan, Wendy and Dan Fitzsimmons, Michelle and Kevin Price, Richard and Randi Berman.
Murray, was a wonderful and involved Zaida to 15 grandchildren: Danielle (Josh), Andrew (Crystal), Stewart (Maly), Courtney (Barry), Jeremy (Fiona), Jordan (Trish), Brianna (Jack), Bradley (Sarah), Stephen (Rachel), Madison, Hana, Sydney, Molly (Zack), Spence, and Grey. He was great-grandfather to 11: Zoe, Emma, Theo, Elle, Aideen, Michael, Easton, Cole, Cian, Westley, and Scott. Murray will be remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews.
After graduation from Pharmacy at the University of Toronto he took a risk and moved his family from Toronto to Chatham where he began a life as a pharmacist, audiologist and entrepreneur. He knew the importance of being an involved community citizen and was elected Trustee to the former Kent County Board of Education and later as an Alderman for the City of Chatham. Murray was a member and leader of Chatham’s Children of Jacob Synagogue and B’nai B’rith.
Murray enjoyed many hobbies and working with his hands. He was always building and flying RC airplanes and making hand-crafted woodworking items like deacon’s benches and rocking horses. He loved hosting family and friends where snowmobiling, skiing, boating, and fishing were a part of every day at the chalet in Huntsville. He will always be remembered as a man who could fix anything, who wouldn’t hesitate to help someone else, who loved music, whistling, chewing gum, dancing, and loving his family.
In true Murray Berman style, please share a Manhattan, a Caesar or a Martini and shout Hallelujah.
