It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Morris «Moishe» Rotstein at the CHUM on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at the age of ninety-one, surrounded by his loving family. Devoted father and father-in-law of Eytan Rotstein, Jonathan Rotstein and Sareka Sehgal. Proud and cherished grandfather of Yonah, Sivan, and Rania Rotstein. Predeceased by his parents, Chaim and Feiga Rotstein and his beloved brother, Prof. Abraham (Abe) Rotstein of Toronto. He will be dearly missed by his partner, Joan Charlap, ex-wife, Sheila Rotstein, as well as by Anne-Maria Sehgal, Eva Rostain, his niece and nephew, Daniel Rotstein and Eve Rotstein, and their families.
Morris was known to all as a gifted entrepreneur who ventured into many businesses and a dedicated family man who was always delighted to spend time with his friends and family and especially his young grandchildren. He was an active man with many passions from sailing to skiing and music. He traveled the world with an open heart and mind, always having meaningful discussions with people that crossed his path. Morris had deep Jewish roots growing up in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood and he was a dedicated member of the Dorshei Emet synagogue and a proud supporter of Israel throughout his life.
Morris attended Baron Bing high school, studied economics at McGill university and held an MBA from the university of Chicago. In his early adulthood, he worked for CP rail and for Steinberg’s supermarket in upper management. Morris established a company in the late 1950’s to deliver family household groceries to people’s homes. In the 1960’s, as popular as supermarkets were, Morris believed delivering food directly to the household would be the future of the industry. A company called Home Supermarket «Supermarché à domicile» was formed using a catalog in English and French. Later, Morris moved to the Caribbean Island of Antigua and established an export food company to service the islands, Central America, and northern South America. His company Overseas Trading was a success, and he was passionately involved in daily operations until his last years.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Thursday, December 21 at 12:00 noon. Shiva private. Donations in his memory may be made to the Dorshei Emet Reconstructionist Congregation, (514) 486-9400.
