It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mona Rebecca Spindler (née Publicover), better known as Aunt Mona, Mona,” on June 25th, 2024, at 101. Mona suffered a brief illness and was surrounded by family at the time of her passing. Born on November 18, 1922, in Blandford, Nova Scotia, Mona was a cherished daughter of Elsie Zinck) and Robert Publicover and a loving sister, aunt, and friend.
Growing up in a large family of 11 children, Mona s childhood was filled with laughter, love, and the close bonds of family. She is survived by her dear sisters Lola, Olive, and Lydia, her sister-in-law and friend Betty, and several cherished nieces, nephews, great great-nieces, and great great-nephews. Mona was predeceased by her sisters Florence, Eileen, Beatrice, Mabel, and Mamie, as well as her brothers Edgehill and Hector. Mona’s life was a tapestry woven with love, community, and family. She spent her working career at Eaton’s, However, she was best known for her exceptional knitting skills creating beautiful mittens, toques, and sweaters for family, and friends. Several of her sweaters were on display at the Fisherman’s Museum in Lunenburg. She also knit and donated hundreds of mittens and toques each year to the St Barnabas Ladies Guild annual fundraiser where she was a long standing member. Mona and her late husband, Garnet, shared 65 wonderful years together, most of which were in Blandford. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and companionship. Mona was also an avid card player, gardener, and baker. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, travelling, entertaining, and always making you feel loved. Mona s wit, resilience, bright smile, and unwavering spirit endeared her to all who knew her. Even in her later years, Mona remained fiercely independent. She just moved from her home into Independent living at Melville Heights last year. She loved her time at Melville, meeting new friends and wonderful staff. She also met so many wonder caregivers from Northwood Home Care. Thank you, you all made her feel like family. Mona will be remembered as a loving aunt, sister, and friend. Her life was marked by love, generosity, and an unwavering strength that inspired all who knew her. Her legacy of
warmth, kindness, and community spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all her family and friends.
A funeral Service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday July 17th in the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards. Burial to take place in St. Barnabas Anglican Church Cemetery. Online condolences can be made to www.rawalker.ca
