It is with great sadness and sorrow that the family of Millicent Compton, a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother, announce her passing on May 13, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience. Born on April 22, 1941, in St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Millicent spent her childhood years growing up in Raleigh, NL.
Millicent’s life was defined by her steady dedication to her family. She is survived by her children: Robert (Carolann), Randy (Natalie), Sharon (Chuck), Perry (Pamela) and Tracy (Stephen). She was the proud grandmother of: Krista, Colin, Courtney, Britney, Kristen, Scott, Jordan, Justin, and Sheryl. A great grandmother to: Brianna, Danielle, Reid, Neveah and Keira. Asher, her newest great-great grandchild, will forever hold a special place in her heart. Millicent is also survived by her sister: Elaine (Todd) and her brother: Guy (Evelyn); sisters-in-law: Selma (Clarence), Sybil (Elmo) and Lucy (Roy); brother-in-law: Harvey (Emma), and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband: Abraham Compton; her parents: Alfred and Ivy Johnson; sister: Eva Blevins; daughter: Marona Compton; parents-in-law: Martha and Thomas Compton; sisters-in-law: Beatrice Pynn and Grace Patey and her brother-in-law: Val Compton.
Millicent’s life was intertwined with that of her beloved husband Abraham, when she moved to St. Carol’s, where they were united in marriage on July 15, 1957. Millicent and Abraham relocated to St. Anthony, where they built a home filled with love and laughter. Together they shared a beautiful journey, blessed with 8 children. Although only 5 of their children survived, their love for each other and their family was immeasurable.
She was a woman of many talents and held various occupations throughout her life. She worked as a dedicated housekeeper and caring babysitter, and even as a movie theatre attendant. Although she never stayed to watch the films herself, she ensured that others had a pleasant experience. Her final employment was at the local fish plant in St. Anthony, where she worked for 30 years before her retirement. Despite the long days at work, Millicent always found the strength to care for her family, preparing meals, doing the laundry, and maintaining a loving home.
Known for her nurturing spirit, Millicent was a remarkable wife and mother. Even though she might have gotten mad with us kids sometimes, it broke her heart to see us leave home and lead our own lives. She possessed a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed sharing jokes and laughter with her family, friends and anyone fortunate enough to be in her presence.
Millicent’s compassionate nature extended beyond her immediate family. She actively participated in numerous organizations, including serving as the President of the Dart League and Girl Guides in St. Anthony. Additionally, she held the position of President in the Lodge and was an active member of The Salvation Army Church in both St. Anthony and Fort McMurray. Millicent also dedicated her time to the Senior Bowling League in Fort McMurray and attended various tournaments, enjoying the exciting trips. She served as the Vice-President for the Golden Years Society in Fort McMurray and volunteered at Heritage Park and the gift shop at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. Additionally, she volunteered in school programs, fostering a love for reading in children.
Outside her commitments, Millicent found solace in her hobbies. She delighted in her knitting of wool socks, crafting beautiful pieces that kept her loved ones warm. Her leisure time included following her beloved soap opera “The Young and the Restless” and engaging with the drama of watching “The Bachelor”.
Throughout her life, Millicent faced many challenges, including surviving cancer, battling flesh-eating disease, and enduring several bouts of pneumonia. Despite the relentless trials and tribulations that crossed her path, and I’m sure us kids gave her many reasons to tear her hour out, she proved to be a fighter who never surrendered. Her spirit shone brightly as she confronted each hurdle with outstanding courage. She refused to succumb to the adversities she encountered and fought relentlessly until her last dying breath. Her unremarkable strength and resilience inspired all who knew her.
Throughout her journey, her faith in God remained unshakeable and her belief in a higher power served as a source of strength and comfort even during the darkest times. With her steadfast devotion, she demonstrated the power of love and faith to sustain one’s spirit through life’s greatest challenges.
Millicent Compton’s legacy is one of resilience, determination, and love. She touched the lives of those around her, leaving a mark on their hearts. Her memory will forever serve as a reminder to persevere in the face of adversity, to cherish family, and to hold fast to one’s faith.
We will miss you dearly, and now you are amongst the angels. Rest in peace mom, we love you!
