Obituary of Michael Graham Brant Edward
Peacefully, on December 19, Michael Edward, of Belfast and then Charlottetown, age 81, passed away at the Provincial Palliative Care Centre, surrounded by his loving family.
Born June 13, 1943, in Brantford, Ontario, Michael was eldest son to Graham & Alice (Monture) Edward. Predeceased by his sister Sheila, he leaves siblings Allyson (Walt) Finden, Erica (Victor) Martisius, Molly (Peggy) Edward, Gethin (Vicki) Edward, cousin Roger (Susan) Passmore and brother-in-law Tom Gallant to mourn his passing. Beloved husband of 52 years to Catherine (Gallant), he was father to Gethin (Meg), Cecily, and Eric (Lisa), and doting grandada to Ruby, Steven, Joseph, Isaac, Crispin, Samuel, Frances and John.
Michael and Catherine moved to the Island in 1973, and for more than 30 years Michael was ‘Mr. Edward’ to countless students at Belfast School, who found learning, guidance and inspiration in his classrooms, and in the many sports teams and musical groups and concerts which he coached and led.
A lifelong Anglican, he found his spiritual home at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Charlottetown, where over the years he made a variety of contributions to the life of his parish family, as Sunday School superintendent, as a chorister, as a member of various parish councils and committees, and most recently, as the parish sacristan.
Michael held a lifelong fondness for rural life, and took pride and delight in the gardens, fields and forest that were his home in Belfast. He was an avid forester, and always concerned for the care and renewable conservation of the Island’s woodland ecology.
While we mourn his earthly absence, all of his family and friends will continue to take comfort and consolation in the spirit of kindness and generosity, in the encouragement of creative excellence, and in the earnest good humour that he brought to all aspects of his life. May he rest in peace.
Visitation from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Sunday, December 22, at the St. Peter’s Cathedral Hall, All Soul’s Lane, Charlottetown. Funeral at 11:00 a.m., Monday December 23, at St. Peter’s Cathedral. Interment to follow at St. John’s Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Belfast. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by St. Peter’s Cathedral and by Farmers Helping Farmers.
