Michael Stephen Suthern, 67, passed away peacefully on February 29, 2024 at Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill, ON, after a two-year battle with interstitial lung disease.
Michael was born on March 18, 1956 in Clinton, ON to Gerald and Faye (Morton) Suthern. With Gerald in the military, Michael and his siblings grew up all across Canada.
Michael enrolled in the local military reserves in North Bay, ON at the age of 17, went to Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean for a year and a half then and graduated from Carleton University in 1981 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. He met his future wife, Heather (Price) while they both served in the reserves. They were married on July 30, 1977 in North Bay, ON. They had two children, Courtney and David, and have lived in Richmond Hill since 1989.
He worked as an entrepreneur at Michael Suthern Computer Services specializing in small business networking for 41 years and retired on December 31, 2023. He was an avid genealogist and travelled across Eastern Canada pursuing stories and documents to build out family trees for both his and his wife’s family dating back hundreds of years. He was involved with the PTA throughout his children’s elementary school years and frequently volunteered as chaperone for field trips. A self-proclaimed Trekkie, he also enjoyed Star Wars and other sci-fi as well as watching crime dramas with his wife trying to figure out whodunit. He had a particular way of telling jokes with a straight face so you didn’t know if it was a true story or not until he got to the end with a twinkle in his eye. He loved to cook but thought recipes were suggestions and so never made the same dish twice, much to his wife’s chagrin. Michael and Heather celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a three week trip travelling around England, France, and Spain. Everyone who knew him thought very highly of him.
Michael is survived by his wife, Heather Suthern, children Courtney (Kyle) Suttill and David Suthern, and siblings Gordon Suthern, Karen (Clayton) Harling, and Joan (Richard) Suthern. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Faye, and siblings, Carol and Laurie.
He has been cremated and a celebration of life will be held in the spring.
