It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our precious son, Michael Richard Joel Marsh at the age of 31.
He is survived by his loving parents Walter & Kim (whom he affectionately called Pebbles), his brother Anthony (Janel), his grandparents Suzanne & Joel Morris, his uncle Kevin Caldwell (Lesley), his uncle Dave Marsh, his niece Olivia, his nephew Taylum, and his cousins Kyle & Sean.
Michael was predeceased by his cherished sister, Alison Marsh. Alison adored her little brother, and he loved his big sister. We are comforted in knowing they are together again. Greeting him as well are his grandparents Michael Caldwell (1984) and Winnifred (1995) and Richard (1991) Marsh. Also left to mourn is his “second mom” Debbie Clarke and his best friend Fred Lazarus (Norma), both of whom were excellent caregivers over the years, always putting his needs above all else, and in turn became a huge part of Michael’s family. Michael also leaves behind a fan club of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends … way too many to count.
Michael was born at 43 weeks with Cerebral Palsy, a neurological condition that affects movement. Although he was 100% physically disabled, he was 100% sharp, clever and funny. Michael never allowed his disability to get him down. In his younger years, he was an ambassador for Easter Seals, distinguishing himself as a role model to so many kids with exceptionalities and disabilities. Exceptional is exactly what Michael was, defying the odds of survival time and time again. He was a fighter from day one, and he was larger than life.
Michael had a great love for socializing, he adored being the center of attention and making people laugh. Though he was never able to speak on his own, it was never difficult to know exactly what he was telling you. Stubborn and immovable, Michael was a storyteller through his eyes, and later, a jester with his computer. Once Michael learned to verbalize his thoughts with assistive technology, there was no quieting his mind. With a few movements of his head, Michael could have an entire room bend to his will. Michael’s luminous smile was contagious, and his laugh would stop you in your tracks.
Michael loved to have conversations. He would speak for hours, mostly about the Blue Jays, his favourite team and his passion. In fact, Michael was always so excited to talk, and had so much to say, that he would type out a word, speak it through his communication device, add another word to the sentence, speak it, and continue in this fashion until his sentence was entirely complete, leaving his family and friends to have to listen to the same tidbits of unfinished sentences, one word at a time, over and over again until he was able to conclude his thought.
Michael was a true ‘socialite’ by nature, whether he was making friends while strolling the mall with his pal Fred, honing his social media skills, or collecting ‘likes’ from friends near and far, Michael’s presence extended far beyond his wheelchair, to know Michael was to love him. Michael took up as much space as he could and connected with the outer world at every opportunity. In 31 years Michael’s list of accolades and accomplishments reads a lot like baseball stats, something he was extremely proud of. Michael’s love for the Toronto Blue Jays was unbeatable. He found his passion for them at a very young age and it was unwavering throughout his life. He was a season ticket holder for Spring Training for the Blue Jays in Florida, and from the sidelines, he was able to be an Armchair or “wheelchair” coach to 15 spring training sessions. He has never missed an opportunity to catch a game, probably having gone to at least 150 at the Skydome/Rogers Centre alone. When Michael would post on social media that he was going home, it was to see a game in Toronto. Michael has met over one hundred of his heroes, the Blue Jays, and built an impressive collection of Blue Jays memorabilia. He lived for his Jays … you would never see Michael not wearing one of his favourite Jays t-shirts or hats.
Michael had a wicked sense of humour, always knew what he wanted and never second-guessed himself; he made his will known to everyone. As an avid fisherman, even the pickerel would surrender to his unrelenting attempts to “reel in the big ones”. A day at the lake fishing meant Michael would insist the fish bite, his impatience often worked in his favour, Michael has had more than one prize catch over the years.
Michael’s charm was disarming, and his legacy will live on through the innumerable lives he touched. Finally free of his wheelchair, there are no limits to how high he can soar. Michael always said that he loved us “to the moon and back” but our love for him goes far beyond that, sweet boy, it is eternal.
Walter and Kim wish to extend sincere gratitude to Michael’s workers, Debbie and Fred, who have become family over the years. Michael loved you both beyond measure.
In Michael’s honour, the family asks that everyone please attend wearing Blue Jays attire, or dress in white and blue to celebrate his colourful, loud and impressive legacy.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday July 23, 2024 from 7pm to 9pm at LESSARD Funeral and Cremation Centre. Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11am in the funeral home chapel.
Remembrance donations to Jay’s Care Foundation or the Ontario Federation of Cerebral Palsy or the Timmins Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
Well, Michael, you’ve finally hit your home run, and you knocked it right out of the park! Til we meet again Bum!
