It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Michael John MacEdward, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and dedicated veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Michael passed away in his sleep at his home in Trenton, Ontario on August 25th, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of honor, service, and dedication to family and others that he cared for.
Michael, known affectionately as “Mike” to his friends and family, was born in Weyburn, SK on October 10, 1964. Mike is survived by his loving family including: his Dad, John William MacEdward and John’s partner Sandy Hodel (Victoria, BC); his sister Kelly Sawchyn, her husband Sean and their son Cash (Calgary, AB); and his sister Kathy MacEdward (Saskatoon, SK). He is predeceased by his mother, Georgina May Jones.
Mike graduated in 1982 from City Park Collegiate High School in Saskatoon. Aside from teasing his sisters, he loved playing hockey and watching professional baseball and there was nary a day where he wasn’t seen in a sports jersey. He joined the military a few years after graduation and demonstrated unwavering commitment and service to his country throughout his career. He proudly served in the RCAF for 25 years where he was stationed at air force bases in Calgary, North Bay, Comox and finally Trenton; retiring in 2012 with the rank of Master Corporal. He saw all of Canada; visiting every air force base in the country and visited many other parts of the world with his longest tour being in Bosnia in 2002. Mike was an avid reader whose collection could rival a library’s. This is more than mildly amusing to his family who never saw him crack a book outside of a sports magazine throughout childhood.
Beyond his commitment to country, Mike’s truest devotion was reserved for his beloved canine companion, Marley. They shared countless adventures, long walks, and likely a fair amount of pizza and TV time. Marles was more than a pet; she was Mike’s faithful confidant and center of his world. We have been very fortunate to have found Marley the perfect forever home with loving people and other Labrador Retriever friends since Mike’s passing. Thank you Dawn and Mike.
In accordance with Mike’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, his family will gather privately to celebrate his life, share cherished memories, and find solace in one another’s company. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to their favorite animal rescue/SPCA or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Mike’s memory.
Mike will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, dedication, and service will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. May he find eternal peace, and may his memory be a source of comfort to family and friends at this difficult time.
