Buley, Michael John – known to
his many admirers as Mike, died peacefully on November 4, 2023 and
happily joined his love Betty who pre-deceased him by five weeks.
Born in Godalming, UK – son of the late Winifred
Rogers (Buley), and lovingly remembered by his children: Elisabeth
(Kevin) and David (Jan); and his grandson, Matthew
(Caolinn).
After an education at his much-admired school, Ottershaw, in
Surrey, UK, Mike joined the RAF as a pilot officer in 1951.
At the time, training programs were offered to British and
NATO forces personnel in various locations in Canada. Mike was
stationed to RCAF Summerside for part of his training program as an
air navigator. Through the kind invitation of Carrie and Gladys Holman
he was invited to a dinner party where he met the love of his life,
Betty. Mike left the RAF in 1953, then joined the RCAF in 1954 and was
stationed in Greenwood, NS. Betty and Mike were married in
1956 and enjoyed subsequent years of a full life of family, work,
travel and party hostings of their own. Leaving the RCAF in 1959, Mike
attended St. Dunstan’s University in order to qualify to be
a teacher in 1963. During his 30 years of teaching mathematics at
Summerside High School and then Three Oaks Senior High School Mike is
remembered for his tweed jackets and four-way ties. His often
eccentric ways of leading math classes are legendary for
Mike’s determination to make even the most complex aspects
of calculus seem enjoyable and understandable. He loved teaching and
also loved learning and it was difficult to be bored in his presence.
He relished in regaling any who would listen with stories of travel
and cruises and Elderhostel. Mike was delighted to share his passion
for travel with students on thoroughly planned trips to such places as
New York, London and Paris. He also relished in designing and building
sets with a coterie of devoted students for the full-scale musical
productions at the high school. Mike’s organizational habits
extended as well to community services that included the Summerside
Community Concerts Society, the Harbourfront Theatre and the Bridge
Club at St. Paul’s.
Mike was a constant ‘fixer-upper’ with
various and sometimes odd building projects at the beloved Stone House
in Summerside, and also at the family Cottage,
Aftermath in Lower Bedeque. Such things as bookcases,
tables, desks, and closets were lovingly created although sometimes
not quite completed. Other projects were always ready to be taken up.
Who can forget the taps that opened windows, or the complexities of
drawers for storing various and sundry objects that could not be
thrown away? Mike also enjoyed being in a kitchen and producing such
things as crown roasts, Yorkshire puddings, Christmas cake and plum
puddings and beautiful and delicate chocolate éclair swans
among many other dishes. His gardening skills helped adorn the world
with flowers and yummy vegetables and yet he still made time to be a
great dad and grandfather – with pickup games of soccer (or
football as he would call it) and
……
Eccentric and loveable to the end, Marmite Mike
will be missed by all who knew and loved him but all can be
assured that he is happy now to be resting with his beloved Betty who
he has missed enormously since her passing 5 weeks
ago.
The Buley family offers special thanks to Mike’s
care team that provided a beautiful month of happiness for him. As
well, deep gratitude is offered to friends called
‘family’ (you know who you are), for their
unending compassion and attention for Mike in his final weeks of
life.
There will be a Celebration of the lives of Mike and Betty in
June, 2024 at Aftermath and the family hopes all will feel welcome to
join them at that time. Interment will occur at the St.
John’s Anglican Cemetery in St. Eleanor’s with a
small private family ceremony there. In lieu of flowers,
donations can be made directly to the Prince County Hospital
Foundation or a charity of your choice. Mike will always be remembered
for his wit, his stories, his gardens, his enjoyment of sharing what
he had with others, but most of all his love for Betty. Please share a
story, a game, a flower, a meal or a moment of joy with someone in his
honour so his spirit will continue to live on. Completion of funeral
arrangements entrusted to Moase Funeral Home,
Summerside.
