MORRIS, Michael James (1948 – 2023), passed away on January 16, 2023, at the age of 74, at his home in Cambridge, Ontario. Michael is survived by his cherished wife of 50 years, Cheryl (née Grebinski); by his beloved daughter Julia Morris-von Luczenbacher (Erik); by his grandchildren Alexander and Sonya, and by his siblings Douglas Morris (Deb) and Diana McLellan (Dan). Michael was predeceased by his son, James Edward “Ted” Morris.
Professionally, Michael was always seeking to challenge himself and to evolve his expertise. He was called to the Bar in 1978 and has been practicing Law ever since. He was well-respected in the fields of Real Estate Law and Business Law. In the middle of his career, Michael took time to obtain an MBA Degree from Queen’s University and to teach in his areas of specialty at the University of New Brunswick.
Always interested in giving back to the community, Michael recently taught at Conestoga College’s Department of Continuing Education. His investment in the community also meant contributing to the governance of the Argus Residence for Young People in Cambridge, Ontario.
Michael will be remembered as a loving father and devoted husband who was fully invested in the well-being of his family. His family will also remember Michael as an avid fly-fisherman who especially loved to explore the Grand River while searching for trout. In his heyday, Michael was a tremendous alpine skier, showing true grit in his adventures on the slopes in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Throughout his life, Michael enjoyed spending time on the water, whether in Hamilton Harbour on his sailboat or, in days gone by, on the icy waters of Lake Superior in his Grumman canoe. In midlife, Michael developed an interest in plants and gardening and, with his wife Cheryl, spent a lot of time and energy turning their backyard into an oasis at their home in Cambridge, Ontario. Finally, Michael and his late son shared a passion for fixing and driving fast, beautiful old cars.
Michael certainly was a man whose spirit thrived on challenge and adventure. He faced his own share of hardship, but he always came at any and every challenge both well-intentioned and with an open heart and mind. His intensity, adventurousness and relentless dedication will be missed by all of those who knew him.
