Michael Gomes Obituary
Michael Atul Gomes, age 83, of Stratford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and family on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. Born in Bangladesh, son of the late Joseph and Anna (Khan) Gomes. Michael is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Agnes Margaret Gomes. He will be remembered forever by his loving children, Rex Gomes (Sophia Mahmood), Agnes Gomes-Koizumi (David Koizumi) and Treanne Gomes Roberts (Ben Roberts) and his grandson Jude Roberts.
Michael was born in Kashinangar, Bangladesh. He studied at Holy Cross in Dhaka and graduated from Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN with a degree in Economics and Philosophy in 1965. Michael married Agnes Gomes in 1969 and moved to Stratford, Ontario in the same year.
Michael was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus. He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. He was an avid college football fan and always rooted for his alma mater, the Fighting Irish. Michael loved all types of fishing. He studied Latin and loved literature, in particular, the works of Homer, Aesop’s Fables, Rabindranath Tagore and Edmund Rostand. He loved nature and his garden was always full of his favorite flowers and vegetables.
Michael is survived by his siblings Peter (Louisa Maya) Gomes, Mary Gomes and his sister-in-law Mary Sandhya Gomes as well as many nieces and nephews. Michael was predeceased by his parents, his father-in-law Martin, mother-in-law Teresa, brother Dominic Gomes and his sisters Agnes, Elizabeth, Teresa and his brothers-in-law Andrew, Joachim Kanta, Joachim Kangal and Marcel.
Friends and family are invited to Michael’s visitation at the W. G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St, Stratford on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will hold a prayer service at 5:45 p.m. Michael’s Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated by Father David Butler and Father Richard Bester at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 96 Huron St, Stratford on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Avondale Cemetery. Reception will take place in the Reception Centre of the W. G. Young Funeral Home following the interment. As expressions of sympathy memorial donations may be made to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul or to St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church Restoration Fund through the funeral home. www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
