Michael Douglas Booth Obituary
Michael Booth passed away peacefully at home on December 26, 2024, surrounded by the family he cherished so deeply. He is survived by his devoted wife, Gay; his much-loved children, Christopher (Celeste), Sharon, and John; and his nine adoring grandchildren.
Born in British Columbia, Mike and his family moved to southern Africa when he was a newborn. He grew up in the vibrant landscapes of Zambia before moving to Canada as a teenager. He attended Bishop’s University in Quebec, where he met the love of his life, Gay. Thereafter Mike attended medical school at McGill University and completed his residency at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. After his medical training the growing Booth family moved to Waterloo where Mike practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology for more than three decades. He was a skilled and compassionate physician admired by colleagues and patients alike.
Mike was more than a doctor; he was a man of generosity and kindness. Despite the demands of his profession, he was ever-present at family dinners, cheered on his children’s activities, and participated broadly in community life. He enjoyed volunteering at the local food bank and was an enthusiastic member of Gourmet, wine & book clubs, and choir.
Family was the cornerstone of Mike’s life. The Booths shared countless adventures, traveling the globe to explore both exotic and familiar destinations. Mike loved golf, canoeing (a passion he shared with friends and his sons) and he inspired his children with his enthusiasm for running, reading, learning, and a deep love for the family dogs. Whether playing by the backyard pool, sampling street food in far-off exotic markets, setting up camp in Algonquin Park, or swimming with his grandchildren lakeside in Kingston, Mike was always a source of warmth and joy.
Known for his kind and compassionate nature and deep curiosity, Mike had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel valued. He always took great interest in people and their stories. He cared deeply for others and supported those in need in quiet and thoughtful ways. Grateful for the beautiful family life he built with Gay, Mike embraced every moment with love and purpose.
Relocating to a beautiful home on Lake Ontario in Kingston allowed Mike to enjoy watching sunrises, waves and birds and spend much treasured time with family from near and far. As his health declined, he was fortunate to be surrounded by compassionate PSWs and caregivers that allowed him to enjoy walks, yoga, music and singing at home until his final days. Savannah, Alex, and Catherine shared their gifts which brought joy and comfort in Mike’s final days. The family extends heartfelt and special thanks to Jennie and Rhea whose extraordinary care and friendship brought much peace to Mike and the family over the last year.
