Michael Wade Obituary
It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving husband, Dad, Poppy, Great Poppy, Uncle, and friend, Michael Anthony Wade, on November 11, 2024, at the age of 80, at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was born in Sydney Mines on April 29, 1944. He was the eldest son of Michael and Annie (Steele) Wade and was very proud to be raised in Cranberry, Sydney Mines.
He was a sports enthusiast. He played and coached the Cranberry Travellers for several years. He was a die-hard Montreal Canadians and New York Yankees fan and could be found at all the rinks and baseball fields once his grandsons started playing. No one cheered louder.
He loved music and could play the mouth organ like his dad, which he often demonstrated at our Saturday night kitchen parties. He could tell a story like no other, and we often said, “You should write a book.” From his early years growing up in Cranberry to when he left home at 17, landing in Kitchener, Ont. With $20 in his pocket, working at the Mad Potters in Sydney Mines, driving a taxi, and being a security guard at Memorial High School, he would keep us entertained with all his tales. But the best story, he would say, was when he met the love of his life at a Legion Dance in 1972, and six months later, they were married. He would often say that Mom chased him until she caught him, but we all know it was the other way around.
Mom and Mike were avid walkers for years, waving and talking to whomever they met along the way. We would often say that no matter where we went, Mike always managed to meet someone he knew.
He loved a good joke, both hearing one and telling one. He would be on the phone with his sister Beverly and brother Hughie…” Did you hear the one about….” And the laughter would start.
His grandchildren were the apples of his eye and could do no wrong. He was their taxi driver, Champion, and sometimes babysitter, giving whatever they asked for…” No, you can’t have one cookie, take two, but don’t tell Nanny.”
He will be forever missed by his loving wife Beverly (Roper), daughter Dawn (Brian) MacKinnon, and son Tracey (Michele) Cavanaugh. He was proud to be called Poppy by Craig, Brianne (Peter), Michael, Mitchell, and Dawn (Mike) and Great Poppy by Alexnder, Jack, Charlie, Rogan, Asher, Nora, and Skylar.
He is also survived by his special nephew, Jamie (Michelle) Sollazzo, brother-in-law, Elmer (Sandra) Roper, sisters-in-law, Elaine (Allister) MacKeigan and Linda Wade, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Besides his parents, Mike was predeceased by sister Beverly Sollazzo, brother Hughie Wade, brother-in-law Jimmy Sollazzo, and sister-in-law Elva (Roland) Strickland.
We wish to thank Dr. Eugene Ignatio and Dr. Doug Kohlsmith, and a special thank you to Dr. Michele McKeough and Louise for your many years of caring for Mike. No words can express how grateful we are to the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home, Theresa Terrace, for your compassionate care and kindness shown to not only Mike during his stay but also to his family. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
In keeping with Mike’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation on Friday, November 15th, from 1-3 pm with a Celebration of Life at 3 pm in JM Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family by visiting www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Mike’s memory may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home or the Alzheimer’s Society of NS.
Mike, until we meet again.
