Merv Morrison passed away peacefully on December 19, 2023. He was born in Saskatoon to Cy and Doris Morrison. Merv’s father worked with the CNR Railway spending many years in Prud homme, Wakaw, Saskatoon and Venne Saskatchewan. Merv tried many occupations before deciding to follow in his father’s footsteps as a railway man. He joined the CNR in 1951 as a telegraph operator and over the years worked in as many as 33 different locations in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. With his parents and two sisters, Marilyn and Maureen, they created their own band that would perform in many of the towns they grew up in. In the Wakaw days, Merv played the clarinet and performed in two orchestra’s. One of the locations Merv worked was Bradwell, Saskatchewan where he would end up meeting his “Dolly” Doreen Pryor. They were married in 1955 and started their family with Mark in 1957 and Martin in 1962. Merv worked as an operator in Bradwell and Rosetown and then became station agent at Conquest. After then transferring to Davidson, he was promoted to Saskatoon in 1974 as a service rep where he covered a region of Saskatchewan and was on the road a lot. In 1980 he became Carload Supervisor and continued on with CNR until retirement in 1984. Merv was always willing to donate his time to many worthy organizations including the Elks, Legion, Prarieland Exhibition, The Shrine Club, Jesters, Stamp Club, etc. Merv was very active with the Shrine Club and played in the Shrine band til he was 91 where he played the bugle and glockenspiel. Sports was a big part of his life where he played and coached hockey, played baseball, loved golf and curling, and had his kids into these activities when they were young. Merv would enter Bradwell curling bonspiels with his wife and kids and loved events like this that would involve the family. People know Merv for his great wit, easy conversation, and master of story telling at a family gathering or in front of microphone. He never shied away from public speaking and loved to make people laugh with good and corny jokes. One of the highlights for the family was getting together with Merv’s sister and their family every two years for a big campout. There was various tournaments including golf, cards, and bocce and lots of love and laughter. The family will miss his standard “isms” like saying “100 PER” and “ That’s what all the girls say” etc.
Merv was survived by his loving wife of 68 years Doreen, his two sons, Mark (Judy) and Marty (Latiesha), his grandchildren Myles (Kendra), Kirk (Alicia), Kayla (Jared), Costner and Kinley, his great granddaughter Kate, his sister Marilyn, mother of Costner and Kinley – Jennifer Dom, brother-in-law Glenn Pryor (Rose Chorney), his sisters in law Linda Dyck and Teresa Pryor.
A Celebration of Merv’s Life will be held at The Saskatoon Shrine Club ( 1021 Saskatchewan Cresent Saskatoon) on January 2nd 2024 at 2:00pm. A private interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to the Shrine Patient Travel Fund ( 2065 Hamilton St Regina Sask)
