Meredith Megan Brison-Brown of Halifax and Cheverie Nova Scotia.
Our darling, one-of-a-kind Meredith passed away Monday July 15, 2024 at home. Born in Halifax on November 14, 1983, she was the daughter of Paul Brown and Lois Brison-Brown.
Meredith achieved in 40 years what most people achieve in a lifetime. Extremely intelligent, a gifted researcher and writer, she was a fierce advocate giving voice to her causes: wildlife rehabilitation, accessibility for persons with disabilities, and new approaches in the care of the autistic.
Meredith was loyal, kind, and devoted to her family and friends, and was an ardent defender of them. Witty, with a quick turn of phrase, and a gifted mimicrist, she had an effervescent and magnetic personality that filled the room. She was a gifted photographer. Meredith never lost her youthful, silly, unedited heart. Honesty, integrity, and a deep abiding faith were the core values of her life.
Her early life was filled with ballet, music, art, imagination, and playing with her cousins in Cheverie.
For her first degree, Meredith graduated from Dalhousie University achieving a double major in Environmental Sustainability and International Studies, fulfilling her need to know more about this planet and its people, both of which she cared for so deeply. She made the Dean’s List and won awards in the process.
Meredith’s love and intuitive natural ability for all things leafy, furry, feathered, fish-scaled or shelled next led her to study at Holland College in PEI, where she achieved a certificate in Wildlife Technology. She returned to NS to work at Hope for Wildlife as a rehabilitator and educator where she worked previously as a summer student. In 2022, Meredith entered graduate studies at Dalhousie University achieving a Masters’s Degree in Occupational Therapy this spring, winning many awards and honours.
While there she ran a successful campaign and was elected as the Disabled Student Rep on the Dal Student Council, where she was a relentless activist fighting for the rights of all students with disabilities on campus and beyond. At the same time, she was the Nova Scotia Director of the National Education Association of Disabled Students, President/Director of Media Relations and Promotions, Dal Accessibility and Inclusion Society and Vice-President/Director of Event Promotions, Dal Disability Advocacy Society. A published author, she presented her work at this year’s National Occupational Therapy Convention held in Halifax. Upon graduation, Meredith accepted an OT position with Classic Physio, Halifax. Her dream was to combine her love for animals and OT and build a small animal therapy farm.
Meredith is survived by her partner Bryn Norwood; parents, Lois and Paul; siblings, Oliver (Doris) and Emma (Darren); niece Lucy, and many cousins, aunts and uncles. Pets Biggie, Aiko and Orca.
Donations in memory may be made to Hope for Wildlife, Autism Nova Scotia, or the Heart and Stroke Fund.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 27 at 2pm in the Cheverie United Church, Rev. Jackie Harvie, Rev. Florence Antle-Brison, and Rev. Jeff Bursey officiating. Private family burial at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the compassionate care of the J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Hwy 215, Summerville, ph-1-902-633-2431 or please visit our website at www.allenfh.ca to sign the guest book or send private condolences.
