POINTER, Melvyn Robert –
January 25, 1953 – April 3, 2023
Mel passed away peacefully on April 3, 2023 at the age of 70 after his long and difficult battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurological disorder. Mel leaves behind his daughter, Caitlin Pointer, and partner, Maureen Smith. Mel was also loved dearly and survived by Lynn Burkart, Taylor Wilson, Dorothy Burkart, Meghan Rist and Kyle Rist, among many other friends and family.
Despite the struggles he faced with PSP, Mel always had a positive outlook, wonderful sense of humor and zest for life. He was an amazing father and partner with a love for travel, sports, music (the louder the better), motorcycles and cars (the faster the better), and all things sweet.
Confronting a disorder like this takes a village – his family would like to thank all of the support workers that took such great care of him: Katherine Walker, whose support was unwavering for both Mel and Maureen throughout their entire journey; Home and Community Care Support Service in St. Catharines; Joanne, his case worker; Ivy, Sarah, Nicole and Val, his amazing PSWs; Hospice Niagara and Niagara-on-the-Lake Palliative Care; and the team of nurses, PSWs and doctors in wing 4A station B at Niagara Health (St. Catharines).
Maureen and Caitlin would also like to thank the friends who advocated for him, who visited, who sent letters and photos, who shared stories of the glory days, and who offered a shoulder to lean on.
Mel was an amazing man, and he will be so dearly missed.
