Antigonish, NS
– It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear
wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend,
Melinda Elizabeth McKenna, on July 14, 2023, at St. Martha Regional
Hospital.
Melinda was
born April 17th, 1942, in Monastery N.S. She
was the daughter of Simon and Gertrude (Tate) Bowie, of Grosvenor.
Melinda attended grade 11 in Mabou and was a member of Guysborough
High School’s first graduating class, and then attended N.S.
Tech in Halifax.
After
graduating she moved to Toronto, Ontario where she met the love of her
life, Patrick Francis McKenna of Brierly Brook, Antigonish County;
they married in Toronto in 1966. After the birth of their first child,
she dedicated her life to loving and caring for her family and being a
wonderful mother. Melinda and Pat moved home to their beloved N.S. in
1974, settling in Brierly Brook.
For more than
25 years they split their time between Brierly Brook and their cottage
in Tracadie N.S., and later spent her winters in Largo, FL. She worked
for the N.S. Department of Transportation, retiring in
1997.
Melinda was a
woman of great faith and believed in the power of prayer and positive
thinking. She embodied the love and charity of her faith, living out
her ideals with great humility and courage. Melinda was a
member of both St. Ninian’s Parish, Antigonish and St.
Peter’s Parish, Tracadie.
Melinda loved
playing cards and was seemingly able to master any card game in
minutes. For many years, she played darts at the Antigonish Legion and
the Beech Hill Fire Hall, and later in life, she took up golf, even
bagging herself a hole-in-one. She loved music, any kind of music, but
especially country classics and in her later years she took lessons to
learn guitar so she could «jam» with her friends and
family.
Her cottage in
Tracadie was her haven, her happy place, over 40 years she built an
oasis by the sea, she loved working in her lily garden, watching
amazing sunsets over St. George’s Bay and spending time with
family and friends. Melinda was an amazing cook, entertainer, and
hostess and at her place, all were welcome and encouraged to say
awhile. There was always room for one more at her
table.
She was
pre-deceased by her son Douglas Francis McKenna, granddaughter Robin
Landry, and grandson Nico Landry – Antigonish, parents,
Simon and Gertrude, brother Ellsworth, and sister Patricia (DeCoste),

Maureen (MacKinnon), Mary (McKenna), brother-in-laws Roland
